Need to build your confidence in the basics of using map and compass for route-finding here in the beautiful Snowdonia landscape? This is a fun way of revising basic map skills, by putting them into practice on a ramble around Beddgelert. This session is based around a moderate 5-hour walk at a slow steady pace with plenty of stops to check maps, positions, etc. It uses routes which are expected to be unfamiliar to the usual casual Beddgelert visitors. Based on the local OS Landranger map, participants are assisted to identify the most suitable route (for their level of fitness and mobility). This then becomes the route-finding exercise for the session, which they lead, (accompanied by their experience guide, whose role is to help and encourage map interpretation and decision making along the way.) Participants will experience the use of traditional map and compass, and also shown how to support (but not replace) these with contemporary digital tools, too. This experience is intended as an introduction, a refresher or a confidence builder for recreational walkers. It is fun and light-hearted, and makes great use of the beautiful but lesser-known terrain around Beddgelert. It does not lead alone to a formal qualification, though it is based soundly on recognized principles and good practice. It could be done as a family or small group experience and is dog-friendly
I’m a retired but active ex-academic with an interest in outdoor adventure, science, environment, and industrial archaeology. I spend a huge amount of my time exploring the lesser-trodden hills, mountains and coastline of North Wales, usually in the company of my dog. I live at the foot of the Moelwyn Mountains, close to the Dyrwyd and Glanlyn Estuaries on the beautiful Cambrian Coast. I lead a social dog walking group, encouraging dog owners to explore and the landscape of Snowdonia safely and confidently with their dogs. I am a warden with a local mountaineering club, and enjoy skill-sharing with folks of all ages, interests and capabilities.

Meet first for initial briefing in a Beddgelert cafe, (no doubt over tea and biscuits) to re-establish everyone's skills and needs. We will then do some initial route planning for a moderate five-hour ramble on some of the less familiar paths in the area. We will include an off-piste section where we intentionally deviate temporarily from the traditional path. Lots of time to rest, reflect and review
