This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in Lower Manhattan. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold.
The second leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument plaza.
This tour is great for groups, team-building, field trips, and it's especially beneficial for school-age children.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for snacks, at any time.
Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book. There will be several restroom breaks.
Please note - Finding parking is extremely difficult in Lower Manhattan. Indoor garages will cost between $35-40. I advise using public transportation or car service.

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

Le lieu

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 20 sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

My husband and I truly enjoyed learning more about NY by having Lawrence as our guide. Lawrence's passion about this topic is deep and strong. He is consistency learning more about this topic to add to this Airbnb experience.

This tour was incredible! I am so embarrassed how much I didn't know about history and was so grateful to Larry for his excellent tour. Larry is a very informed, kind, passionate, excellent presenter/storyteller, and just an overall great person. I have so much to read now and must share with it others. Thank you so much! African Americans built this country and you will be horrified to see that these facts are hidden on tiny plaques around the city. Thank you, Larry!

Please do this experience! Larry is the MAN and his knowledge on the subject is unmatched. He really helped me understand the plight of the enslaved Africans first brought to New Amsterdam by the Dutch; a true, brutal sight into how things were in the 1600s and the story through the centuries. His demeanor is spectacular and his storytelling makes it so real. Practically anyone could do this experience; the walking was not arduous at all. Larry includes adequate breaks for any needs you may have.

Every visitor and resident New Yorker should take Larry’s tour. His knowledge of the city’s history well beyond the white washed, snapshot version is invaluable. Starting with the four women sculptures at the “American Indian” museum, Larry opened our eyes to how black people are portrayed or straight up left out of New York history even though it was built by their labor. Incredible value to spending time with Larry learning the history of New York from a rarely told historical perspective.

Lawrence’s tour was amazing! It was my first visit to NYC and the knowledge Lawrence dropped were pure gems! My friend, a native New Yorker, learned a lot too. As black women & educators, this info is critical and should be taught to everyone. The distance and length of the tour was good too!

Went on a tour of lower Manhattan today with Lawrence Henderson. It was AWESOME! If you're interested in some of the facts left out of the history books, check him out. I suggested that the subtitle of his tour be: Hidden in Plain Sight. Especially great for any educator.
