Bee-Ginner BeeKeeping:

How can thousands of honeybees construct perfect hexagons in close to complete darkness without a verbal or written language? From a safe distance, event participants will get an introduction to a working beehive. An experienced beekeeper will explain the changing roles of bees within a colony, how they function as a single organism and how they fight off pests and predators. Participants will gain an increased understanding of the current threats to bees and discuss the vital role they play in the pollination of our local plants.

Following the visit to the apiary, guests will stroll the gardens and learn about pollinator friendly plants and flowers.

Instruction will take place at an outdoor hive and gardens. Protective gear is provided.

Honey tasting and refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the class, and the Farm Market will be open so guests can bring home some honey to enjoy with family and friends.

As a Slow Food leader and food educator, I feel it's essential to show the interconnectedness between what happens the garden and the food on our plate. The apiary is an important part of my small-scale sustainable farm. Guests can experience that interaction, and learn the story that could not be told without including our beloved pollinators.

My land, rich with native botanicals and wildlife, has been allowed to flourish naturally. This makes for the perfect environment for pollinators, who can easily forage for nectar, gather pollen and have access to fresh pure water.

Andrew Hatt, our expert bee-keeper and facilitator of this fascinating experience, will enlighten you to the importance of the honeybee and how to do all that you can to help protect them and the many other pollinators who are essential to human survival.

Le lieu

Pound Ridge with only 2,500 full time residents, and an equal amount of weekenders, is home to the largest park in Westchester, The Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, boasting 4,700 acres of natural wilderness. Scotts Corners, where Pound Ridge Organics is situated, is the smallest hamlet in the county. This historic, quiet but 'hip' town (that has never seen a traffic light) has been a haven for artists, musicians, writers & celebrities for decades.

I signed up for this experience as a surprise for my husband who has taken an interest in bees. Andy was so welcoming and knowledgeable which made it a really great afternoon. We learned a lot in a short time and really enjoyed ourselves. Would definitely recommend.

What a great day of beekeeping! Loved being around the hives and learning so much about the world of bees. So much knowledge to be absorbed and was super friendly the whole time. Great location and a fun way to be introduced to beekeeping

This is a great introduction to apiary- learning about bees and bee keeping. Andy did not merely dump his decades of knowledge but engaged the group with insightful demonstrations and intriguing facets of what makes bees possibly the most crucial insect for the existence of the world’s flora and fauna. In the process, we were happy to support Donna’s cause for the local farmers and exposure to healthy food and healthy living.

We loved this beekeeping experience with an incredibly knowledgeable beekeeper Andy answering over 2 hours of questions from guests. Couldn't have asked for a better experience and wonderful farmers market!
