Our tour starts in Flagler Village, home to the up and coming arts district of Fort Lauderdale. We begin by exploring the history of Fort Lauderdale's pioneers and how they impacted the development of the city. As we walk we will examine the relationship between the built environment and how that impacts crime, traffic, and the experience of being a pedestrian. We will discuss the history and various types of architectural forms including brutalism, frame vernacular, revival, modern and mid-century modern. We will identify the city's most well-known pieces of architecture, and discuss the interpretation of those buildings. Although Fort Lauderdale is not known for its hills, I will show you 3 hills in the city that most locals don't know exist. We will conclude our tour at the MASS district, Music and Arts South of Sunrise, one of the city's two art districts, known for it's galleries, bars, and breweries.
