Welcome to my backyard farm and studio! We'll be making tote bags and bandana scarves using a traditional indigo dye bath. You will learn shibori techniques in order to create patterns on your naturally dyed indigo pieces. I'll walk you through the process of how indigo works, its history, as well as various applications as a dye, and you will leave with some one of a kind items made by you!
You will get to make both a scarf and a tote bag to take home with you. We'll start by sipping some tea and talking about your options in terms of methodologies and techniques and then I will assist as you create your own items. You'll also get to feed treats to my three goats Fiona, Ferdinand, and Felicity (and babies come springtime). They love attention and head scratches!
If you are not seeing the day / time you are looking for please feel free to message me to inquire about adding a slot for you.

You will need to get yourself to / from my studio.

I hold an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and my work has been shown internationally. I focus on the intersection of art and craft, my primary mediums are fibers, glass, and clay. I also co-founded a local co-op gallery which recently opened called Carnation Contemporary (www.carnationcontemporary.com), and have a dynamic studio practice of my own: www.carolynhopkins.com
Le lieu
This workshop is located in my personal studio on my backyard farm at the edge of Portland and the Columbia river gorge. This half acre not-so-urban farm features goats and old growth firs. My studio is an active space where I make sculptures and dyed items. Often you will get to see some of my work in progress. Come join me at my special little homestead!

Carolyn is a very good teacher, she explained and demonstrated each step clearly and made sure we understood what to do. We were a group of four and everyone had an opportunity to make two pieces that we got to take home.
Spent a fun afternoon on her deck learning the basics of Shibori.
*An added bonus was petting and feeding her goats.
I highly recommend this experience.
Thanks again Carolyn!

This was such a great experience! Carolyn was very knowledgeable on Shibori and other forms of dye. It was a wonderful hands on experience and allows you to get as creative as you'd like. Carolyn allowed us to feed and pet her goats throughout and they were so cute and friendly. We left with a beautiful scarf and tote creation of our own and I now have a basic enough knowledge to try my hand at this on my own. Thank you, Carolyn!

Carolyn was very hospitable. Made me some warm tea before we got started on the different techniques for shibori indigo art.
Super happy with how my indigo scarf and tote bag designs came out! I also enjoyed meeting and feeding her lovely goats! Worth the experience. :)

I had so much fun with Carolyn and the group and I loved the pieces I got to make :)
Carolyn was friendly and was super helpful on helping decide what to make and achieving the look you wanted. I love learning about how she makes the dye and her process.
But of course the goats stole the show! I loved meeting and feeding Ferdinand and Felicity (great names)! They were so cute and friendly I probably could have stayed they whole 3 hours with them haha
