***Given Chile's current political unrest, this tour will be heavily influenced in the social unrest in Santiago and how this is reflected on our architecture *** Given the constant protests, there is a HIGH PROBABILITY of TEAR GAS exposure. So be ready to run, be ready to screem, and be ready to be in large crowds (depending on where the protest is that day). We begin at Plaza Italia, at the heart of Santiago and move along Alameda (Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins) in search of the most relevant buildings and streets, with the intent of discovering symbols, icons, and meaning behind famous places along this important avenue. We will visit places such as Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, Universidad Católica, Colegio de Arquitectos, Pasaje Nueva York, Paseo Banderas, La Moneda, and the iconic Torre Entel. Each place holds a specific anecdote which will bring richness and understanding to your experience in Santiago. We will walk a total of 3.5 km and take pauses in between for photography and to answer questions that may arise along the way. We will also make a small stop to grab a quick snack, which includes vegan options made by locals. Be prepared to walk, listen, and visualize the relevant episodes in our history through the lasting eye of architecture and Chilean culture.
I'm an architect and fine artist residing in Chile since 2010, after living in California for 10 years. I left my job as an architect to become a full-time artist. Even though I love architecture, working in an office didn't allow me to express my creativity freely. This is the reason why I came up with the idea of giving tours since it combined my passion for architecture and art, which may bring meaning to people's lives. I see our architecture and its history as a means of explaining ourselves as a culture. I am always interested in finding the art within places and the influence this generates in our daily inspiration. I have studied buildings and locations within Santiago extensively, which helps me to understand the circumstances and decisions behind each place.
