Au programme

Starting at Belfast city hall (we meet at the front gates of City Hall in Donegall Square North) and finishing by the Beacon of Hope beside the river Lagan, the tour visits 7 locations in the city centre where major events occurred during the conflict.

We start with a short introduction to Irish / British history and why the Troubles start in the late 1960’s. Over the course of 1.5 miles and 2 hours and 15 minutes we then tell the stories of each site; what happened and why, who was involved, and the effect these attacks had on the city and its people, affecting nearly every part of our daily lives.

We also demonstrate the impact of the peace process; you will witness the social and cultural regeneration of the city as we walk through the Cathedral Quarter and waterfront areas where you will also see some of the street art that demonstrates our newfound vibrant culture.

Throughout the tour we use visual aids with images of the Troubles and the places we visit from the 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s to help you envisage the realities of life then compared to now.

The tour is factual and historically accurate to ensure it is unbiased and non-partisan, but we also weave our own stories into the tour to bring our history to life for you.

There is also time built into the tour to ensure that questions are encouraged from guests and that our answers are meaningful.

We are Mark Wylie, Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly and James Ellson, conflict historians with qualifications in Irish History, Politics and Anthropology. We were all born in Belfast in the 1960's, (in the year the Troubles began!).

We have worked extensively in teaching, mediation work with interface communities and ex-combatants, and Victims & Survivors groups, and of course as tour guides.

We began giving tours to visitors in 2013. We are immensely proud of our city and this is reflected in what we do. Our ‘A History of Terror’ Belfast city walking tour was Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards in 2019 and is the only ‘peace and reconciliation’ or ‘political history’ tour to receive a 5 star rating by Tourism Northern Ireland. Paul was named 'Top UK Tour Guide' at the Wanderlust World Guide Awards in 2019.

Le lieu

We meet at the front gates of Belfast City Hall in Donegall Square Nor and will visit 7 locations in the heart of the city including the pedestrianised central shopping area, the Cathedral Quarter, home to some of our best and worst bars, restaurants and street art, and then finish by the Beacon of Hope on the banks of the river Lagan, with views across to the Castlereagh Hills and the iconic cranes in Harland & Wolff.

This was a great introduction to the Belfast City Centre and the history of the Troubles in the City. The guide was very knowledgeable about the overall history, interesting stories, and gave good thoughtful answers to all our questions. This tour also felt quite unbiased so I feel like we learned both sides of the story.

Gabe was a fantastic tour guide. He needed no notes and was a fantastic narrator. He injected his personal anecdotes and humour into heavy subjects. Would highly recommend this tour, and Gabe, to anyone. Can’t recommend enough. Didn’t want it to end!! The best tour we’ve ever been on and we’ve been on plenty the world over.

One of the best things we did on our 3 day trip to Belfast. The stories, the visualisation everything was so great that it actually felt like we were there witnessing it. Highly recommend this.

This tour was really personal and very educational, and the audio machines helped with social distancing. The tour group seems very professional and organized, and our guide Mark was fantastic and talked a bit about his own life experiences as someone from here. Will be looking into their other offerings and I would highly recommend checking this tour out.
