Grants Cottage is a newly-renovated, dog-friendly, Listed thatched village house under 10 minutes drive from beautiful, sandy beaches in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Perfect for summer or winter breaks. Large secure garden, Aga, wood burner, big kitchen/dining room, cosy sitting room, luxurious linens and comfortable super-king-sized beds.

Le logement
Grants Cottage occupies a pretty village setting, opposite the medieval church and water pump. Only ten minutes from the ferry, and the shops of nearby Newport. The historic coastal town of Yarmouth, with its individual shops and delicatessen, is also close by. There are many footpaths on the doorstep, leading up to and across the downs, affording spectacular scenery and breathtaking views.

Furnished with antiques and sumptuous soft-furnishings, the accommodation comprises a cosy sitting room with wood-burning stove, shelves stuffed with books and games, a flat screen 'Smart' television, DVD player and DVDs, and a Bose iPod dock with iPhone adapter. The kitchen is large, with dining and sitting areas. There is an Aga which is lit in the colder months, electric fan oven and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and a washing machine and tumble drier in a small, separate utility area. There is wifi access, and a desk situated in the hall, with ample workspace for a laptop, and a wireless printer provided. The downstairs bathroom has bath, electric shower, washbasin, WC, shaverpoint and heated towel rail. The small staircase leads to the first floor where there are two double bedrooms and one twin. There are two super-kingsized beds and two singles; but all the deep, pocket-sprung mattresses are zip-and-link and so may be split or combined as required. The two larger bedrooms have built in wardrobes, while the smaller twin room has a hanging rail and generous drawer space. Also upstairs is a WC, with washbasin and shaver point.

Outside there is a good-sized garden with plenty of lawn area and a terrace with large dining table and chairs. A lockable shed provides safe storage for sports equipment. The cricket pitch at the rear of the garden can be accessed, which in turn leads to tennis courts and a children's play area. The local dog-friendly pub is a couple of minutes' walk away and has a menu especially for dog-guests, while the Island's pub of the year in nearby Shalfleet is just a five minute drive.

The cottage is perfect for summer holidays due to its proximity to the coast and the many attractions the Island offers, but also is fully heated and cosy enough for autumn and winter breaks when one can curl up with a good book in front of the wood-burner, or go for bracing walks on Tennyson Down followed by a delicious pub lunch, when the crowds have left. We are pet friendly and welcome one or two small, well-behaved dogs for an extra charge of £25.00 per dog.

Calbourne, Isle of Wight, Royaume-Uni

The village of Calbourne has been designated a conservation area, and is situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are many picturesque thatched cottages within the locality, and the West Wight is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the Island with it's rugged coastline and sprawling downland. Fantastic walking country begins right on the doorstep.
Brook Bay, four miles away and a six minute drive, is famous for its dinosaur fossils. Compton Bay (10 minutes by car) was named as one of the top 50 beaches in the world by The Sunday Times Magazine in 2015. It is a favourite with surfers, paddle boarders, windsurfers and kite boarders alike. Also great for swimming, building sandcastles, or investigating the rock pools at low tide. Freshwater Bay is found a little further along the coast, and from there Alum Bay and the famous Needles. The New Inn in Shalfleet has been named Dining Pub of the Year several years running and is just five minute drive from the cottage. The Sun at Hulverston and the Three Bishops in Brighstone often have live music and are also great for food. Mottistone Manor Garden is close by, and Newtown with its historic Old Town Hall and protected salt marshes inhabited by many rare bird species is under fifteen minutes' drive. Further afield is Osborne House, Queen Victoria's Island residence; the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet; and for children Blackgang Chine is a must, as is Robin Hill for outdoor adventure activities. Yarmouth Castle is just over ten minutes drive, as is Carisbrooke Castle where Charles I was imprisoned, and there's a Roman Villa at Brading. If you're into golf then there's a testing links course overlooking Freshwater Bay; but whatever your preference, be it Alpaca Trekking, horse-riding, sailing, mountain-biking, paragliding, canoeing or just exploring the many bridleways and footpaths, the Island has plenty to offer.

I'm an author living near the Welsh borders in a beautiful corner of Herefordshire. I was born and educated on the Isle of Wight and so still consider it to be home. I fell in love with Grants Cottage in August 2015 and have spent the last few months completely renovating it in order to turn it into a perfect retreat, both for writing and for re-discovering the Island.

Pendant votre séjour
I don't live on the Island but am always available on the telephone or by email, and there is a local housekeeper who can deal with any queries or problems should they arise.
