Hatter's Cottage is on a small-holding right in the heart of the beautiful Dyfi Valley. Close to the beach at Borth and the estuary at Ynyslas where 'Hinterland' was filmed.

There's walking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching too at RSPB Ynyshir - and you can help feed the chickens, ducks and goats.

We're a one mile walk to the nearest local pub, five minutes by car to the sea, with views of the glorious Dyfi valley from the back garden - which transforms into a bluebell wood in Spring.

Le logement
IMPORTANT - this is a two bedroom cottage with beds for four people, but we do provide put-u-up beds for another two people - as a family of six we know how expensive and difficult it can be to find accommodation... And we do like to be accommodating.

Hatter's Cottage is part of Goitre Fach a 14 acre small-holding on the edge of Cors Fochno, world famous for its wildlife and nature. We've a small herd of Golden Guernsey goats, chickens, ducks and some resident sheep.

Goitre Fach - little wooded place in English - is just that, with loads of space for kids to play in, make dens and try their luck at catching slow worms and grass snakes. The variety of wildlife is surprising, from pipistrel bats to Tawny owls, Red kite and woodpecker. Look out for the rare rosy marsh moth and equally scarce bog orchids. Amazing nature on your front doorstep.

The cottage itself is a new-build replacement on the site of the original cattle byre. It's clean, warm and modern, but still has character. Space is used as effectively as possible to make your stay comfortable an cosy.

Downstairs is a through lounge, dining area, kitchen, whilst upstairs there are two bedrooms, a large mezzanine with a king size bed and a smaller one with two singles. There is a put u up bed which will fit in either bedroom and a pop-up cot.

Accès des voyageurs
ABERYSTWYTH - 9 miles.......MACHYNLLETH - 9 miles

There's an hourly train service to our nearest station at Borth direct from Birmingham. We can pick you up from the station which is only a 7 minute drive from Hatter's Cottage.
North-south buses from Bangor to Cardiff drop off just a mile up the road, and again we're happy to pick up if you let us know when you're arriving. Sadly the 'bike-rack bus' is not longer running - a victim of health and safety!

The main entrance and patio doors open onto a south west facing deck with solid wood garden furniture and there's access to nearby green lane and woodland.

Autres remarques
The price you see on the main page is the price you pay - we have no hidden charges for cleaning etc - and we don't bump up the price of your stay once you book. Many others do.

PEAK SEASON BOOKINGS - July and August - we'd prefer to book out weekly - Saturday to Saturday.

DOGS - we love well behaved dogs and they are very welcome, but we do ask that they remain downstairs and are kept out of the bedrooms and that they are not left alone for long periods of time. We also ask that you keep them on a lead in the farmyard, but there is a green land just a few footsteps away where they can run off the lead. Please make sure that you 'poop and scoop'.

WI-FI, mobile signal and TV - we're in rural Wales and super-fast fibre optics haven't reached us quite yet. There is Wi-fi in the cottage, but it's limited by the three foot wide, 200 year old walls. There is a direct ethernet connection in the sitting room with unlimited internet access. This also serves the TV.

EE mobile signal is fine, but you may have to stand outside to find it! Other service providers - O2 for example - are notoriously poor in rural areas.

Please feel free to phone us to talk through your holiday requirements.

Goitre Fach is a 14 acre small-holding on the edge of Cors Fochno, (URL HIDDEN) a UNESCO Biosphere reserve, the only one in Wales and world famous for its wildlife and nature. We've a small herd of Golden Guernsey goats, a motley collection of chickens, ducks and guinea fowl and a handful of sheep. There's plenty of room for kids to play in a 2 acre 'wild-wood' - and yes they do seem to enjoy feeding the animals as well!
We're a mile from the local pub and a 5 minute drive to Borth beach and the Ynyslas estuary. Machynlleth and the Centre for Alternative Technology are 10 miles away, and the Dyfi Osprey Project and RSPB's Ynyshir nature reserve are just 5 miles away. Aberystwyth, with a lively Arts Centre, countless cafes and bars, the National Library of Wales, a very short pier and a very long promenade is 8 miles and there is a sporadic bus service from the end of the road.

HISTORY - Hatter's Cottage has been re-built on the site of an old hat-makers cottage. You know those traditional black Welsh lady's hats, they were the main industry for our little hamlet back in the 1840s. The new style had just come in and almost all the iconic hats - as well as the miner's helmets - were made here and in Tregaron. Why? Local people had turbury rites to the peat on the bog, it gave them free fuel which was needed to steam mould the woollen felt, from local fleeces, into shape. Then they were shipped off to the closes silver mining town of Tre Taliesin, a mile and half away, and sold on across the rest of Wales.

Former journalist and now law student - the oldest fresher at Aberystwyth University - smallholder and boat owner. We like meeting new people so there's a warm welcome for you at Hatter's Cottage, a newly completed re-build of an 1840's milliners home and workplace. The cottage is clean, warm and modern and we do all we can to make sure you enjoy your stay. We've lived here, on our 14 acre smallholding for just over 28 years, close enough to 'civilisation' but rural enough to be out in the country. We're pretty relaxed, if you want to chat and find out a bit about the area we're happy to oblige. If you'd rather keep to yourselves, then that's fine too
