A refined atmosphere, with high ceilings, white walls, and a great feeling of luminousness. Everywhere are lovely kilim rugs and pieces brought back from the owners' travels – fine old wooden chests, antique wardrobes, contemporary art and books.

Bez-et-Esparon, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

La Bastide d'Esparon is a haven full of breathtaking views in this very spectacular medieval hamlet perched on an eagle's nest at 700 meters high. With its Roman Chapel from the XIth century, its pine forest on top of the village and its 25 houses and its running fountain and communal oven.

La Bastide d'Esparon is located in the untouched and intact hamlet of Esparon which is a 'Village Classé'. It is a dead end, you reach it after 3 kilometers uphill and then you are at 700 meters--the eagle’s-eye views are amazing and it is genuine rural France overlooking the National Park of the Cevennes as well as the high plateaux of Les Causses.

40 minutes from Montpellier and Nîmes airports, bus and train stations.

From here, you can visit the area of The Languedoc, Les Cevennes, Les Causses and go to all the great summer festivals of Avignon, Arles, Sete, Aix, Montpellier, Nimes, and more.

Or you can stay in the house which has great indoor-outdoor living spaces or just take great walks and enjoy the fantastic rivers and non-touristy quality of the region.

The area of the Cevennes is part of the UNESCO World Heritage for its authentic natural landscapes.

La Bastide d'Esparon is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon in the Department of Le Gard and frontier the department of l'Herault.

What we usually do:
We usually leave for the day and either go to one of the many local rivers with a picnic, or we head off one of the many trail discovering new vistas, or we go to the many cultural cities in the environment, or we go in the Camargue for a swim in the Mediterranean or we just read a good book on the terrace or we take a walk in the village or we go to the local market, or we go to the Brocante, or we go horseback riding, or we go canoeing...

And more:
-Walking distance from many GR Walking trails and local farms and refreshing rivers.
-In The Parc National des Cevennes. Esparon is a Village Classe. In the UNESCO World Patrimony.

Go to the Guidebook for more information on special sightseeing and nature outings.

SWIMMING:In the summer, there are many rivers to go to for great swimming, beautiful water and no one along the river:
1/ 10 minutes away where you can go and swim.
The nearest is at Breau, easy trail to get to. Great for kids.
Another one is au Coudoulous, great in the morning.

2/ 20 minutes away: L'Arre: At ganges in the direction of Saint-Laurent du Minier.

3/30 minutes away: Le Cirque de Navacelles. A spectacular canyon with miles of river, where you can picnic and walk on trails.

4/ Laroque. Canoe-kayak. for half a day or a whole day, you can go canoeing in the easy gorges of L'Herault. A lot of fun.
Not dangerous.

5/2 hours away. Near Montpellier, the beaches of the Mediterranean. You can go for the day and bathe in the Mediterranean. There are some beaches where there are very few people. Maguelonne for example. As soon as you walk away from the parking lot, there are kilometers without anyone. It is not like the Riviera. We go for the day.

One last thing, La bastide d'Esparon is located at 700 meters. Even when it is very hot, there is always a nice soft breeze at the hamlet and the house because the walls are very thick never gets too warm inside.

I am a fine art photographer. I like spaces and colors. I was born in Paris, France and presently live in New York. I live in 2 houses which are my havens and which I offer as a host when I am not there.. When I am not in my house in New York (from which I work and live with my one of my sons who is 29), I am in my house in the South of France. The house in the South of France is a family house where I have spent my summers since I was 5. I am a photographer working in New York. This has been my country house where I have spent many summers and it is a perfect contrast from the city life. I like the perfect calm and the luminous space I have in this house with the great views on the rolling hills and the light on the mountains of the Cevennes and the high plateaux of the Causses. This house is my sanctuary. I love the evenings watching the sunset with a glass of rose on the southern terrace, going to the rivers with a picnic, hiking in the mountains. A perfect antidote to NY.

I interact a lot with my guests to prepare for their stay and answer their questions.
I will not necessarily be on the premises but the superintendent will be there. On the premises when I am not there, I have a great super who has been taking care of the house for the past 20 years. I am very computer savvy so I am always reachable by mail/SMS.
The house has been featured in TF!-du cote de chez view. Watch the video called : Du côté de chez vous, bastide perchée du 8 janvier 2017. Here is the link, but it might not work, if you are out of France: (URL HIDDEN)

Here are some testimonials of guests who have stayed:
Jo Jenkin (UK): 12 People, May 2014
"Our Party of 12 adults spent a wonderful 10 days at la Bastide d'Esparon. Everyone was delighted with the house, the restoration, furnishings and lovingly placed artefacts.
The property is clean and well maintained and the caretaker very helpful. The whole place has a very special ambiance and every day started and ended with very convivial breakfasts and dinners on the terraces or around the table in the living room. The house is in a superb location with stunning views and although it is quite a steep road to reach it, the road was always empty and it was never a problem.
We walked every day, both from the house and on the GR's within a 25 km radius. There are some classic walks, spectacular views and lovely villages.
It was a very happy stay in a very special place."

Arielle de Gasquet (France), July 2013. 6 People.
"Maison avec beaucoup de charme et une vue exceptionnelle, dans un hameau typique. Calme absolu, belles promenades et baignades dans les rivières."

Paul Sara (USA), June 2013. 9 people.
"Martine is an amazing host. It is magnificently decorated with objects from around the world, art pieces which range from abstract to picturesque, and is abundant in plants and vines. There are multiple terraces with fireplaces and bbqs, and the rooms are very cozy and charming. The food of the region is exquisite as well. The weather is warm but not humid during the day and the night is fresh so you can get that perfect sleep. The view on the valley and the stars at night are breathtaking. The village is quiet but far from being lifeless. It is a great pad to visit other parts of the region and to come back to in the evening. There are rivers and canyons at proximity to the house which are beautiful and refreshing. I could not recommend this place more; my stay there has been excellent, relaxing and therapeutic."
