The Old Winery was recently (2014) converted to accommodate guests in a dramatic, but very comfortable space. It is located on a vineyard, with magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and horse farms, in the picturesque village of Rectortown, Va., one-hour drive from DC and 40 min to Dulles airport. With 2 bedrooms and 2 ½ baths and comfortable, rustic charm, The Old Winery is perfect for an intimate family getaway. We will consider requests to host large parties for an extra charge.
The Old Winery is a large, barn-like structure, with 3-story ceilings and barn-style doors that swing open, leading to large patios and great views. It is fully air-conditioned and heated with new systems. Indoors, the main hall is set up for daily dining use with two wine-tasting tables and an array of comfortable lounge furniture. There is also a full bar and bar stools, fully stocked with glassware, an ice maker, and wine refrigerators. You will also find a foos-ball table and an electronic piano, which guests are welcome to enjoy.
Off the side of the main hall is another entertaining space, the “oak barrel room”, now converted into a large TV and games room, with comfortable seating and another large dining (or games) table. This room has a 65” HD TV with surround sound and a DVD player (please bring your own DVDs), books and board games, great for entertaining kids while the adults have dinner in the main hall. The oak barrel room has large picture windows that overlook the woods and, in winter, a full-on view to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Behind the bar is a fully-stocked and equipped catering kitchen, including cutlery, dinnerware, pots & pans and serving platters. There is a variety of small appliances (blenders, coffee makers, pizza oven), as well as an industrial dish washer that runs a cycle in 3 minutes!
Upstairs, you will find two fully-carpeted bedrooms, both with closets and modern bathrooms en suite. One bedroom is set up with a king bed, a desk, reading chair and two dressers. The other is set up with three twin beds, each with night tables, bed-side lamps and a dresser. The beds can be reconfigured into a king and twin, depending on guests’ needs. A country train passes nearby approximately 5-10 times/day. (Please note: the train makes noise for 60-90 seconds while passing, sometimes at night. Most of our guests find this charming, but for those who don’t, or who sleep lightly when windows are open, we understand and ear plugs are provided!)
Outside the Old Winery, there is another wonderful entertaining space. There is a large patio with an enormous wood portico, complete with decorative lights and ceiling fans. The portico has tables and chairs to enjoy outdoor dining. There is also built in cabinetry and a zinc-topped table suitable for serving. Feel free to use the gas grill. There is an additional sitting area outside, with lounge chairs, sun umbrellas, and an outdoor fireplace. Beautiful views abound.
Accès des voyageurs
The Old Winery is accessible near the end of a long driveway that winds through a 44 acre property. Signs will point you to guest parking. Seven acres are under cultivation as a vineyard, and the rest is comprised of beautiful fields, woods, and lovingly maintained gardens. There is an historic cottage (where General McClellan was staying when relieved of his command by President Lincoln) at the property’s street entrance (rented separately) and the owner's residence (another barn-like structure) is also on the property. Guests are welcome to take walks around the property to enjoy the views and gardens, including the vineyard, but are asked to respect the privacy of the owners and their tenant by not approaching their respective residences, demarcated by wood fencing. There will be signs and maps at the Old Winery to reduce the possibility of misunderstanding. Cyclists are encouraged to bring their bicycles; the area is perfect for bike rides (or car rides) to take in the beautiful scenery. There are excellent walks in every direction. Apart from Middleburg, 6 miles to the Northeast, the town of Marshall, five miles to the South, has a supermarket and excellent dining and gourmet food provision, including the famous Whole Ox Butcher and the Red Truck Bakery.
