History of The Cabin @ Black River View

On the property used to sit a small red cabin. That cabin was built by my father Glen Pickering (his veteran burial flag is on the shelf by the picture of the cabin inside) and his best friend Don Healey with hand tools and no electricity in 1969 on top of the hill near the corner of the pipe fence. Our families grew up coming to the 742 square foot cabin. After my father passed, I along with a friend of mine bought the cabin from my Mom and Mr. Healey. We began improving it. Tragically, the cabin burned down in 2012. The only remaining item is the lantern that sits bedside in the master bedroom. The bar pendant lights are an homage to the old cabin as that is the only light we had.

In its’ place sits the 1,739 square foot cabin that you rented. The tongue and groove that you see on the wall is Northern White Pine from Maine. The stairs and railings are made from Short Leaf Pine that is the only native Pine to the Ozarks and that you see lining the view to the River. All cabinets and vanities are made from hickory that you find in these woods as well. The dining room chandelier is symbolic of the railroad ties that have been made in the nearby sawmills for over 100 years and the rain chains are former logging chains from the area. Another product made in these hills are represented by the light fixtures throughout the house. The master bed frame is made of Idaho Lodgepole Pine. The wood slices on the bar are similar to a bar in Glen Carbon Illinois owned by my Nephew Justin Pickering appropriately named The Cabin. The wood from the slices come from Mesquite, Ponderosa Pine from Arizona, Hickory, Cedar and Oak trees. The fireplace mantle is from Alligator Juniper wood and came from the Rodeo Chediski fire, the second largest wildfire in Arizona history. The deer above the mantle is named Roman.

Autres remarques
There are board games, puzzles, horseshoes, washers, books on the Ozarks, movies for the DVD, Wii games, Big Buck Hunter and ping pong table and paddles, two TV’s with Direct TV and HBO and karaoke machine. If driving to the river, use a four wheel drive vehicle. Suggested Footwear: Wear hiking boots on the rock roads and in the forest. Wear water shoes or old tennis shoes in the River as it is a rock bottom. Flip flops are comfortable, but not appropriate in the forest or on the rock beach.

Lawn chairs, pop up canopy, camp tables and Smokey Joe grills are providing for your use at the beach and are located in the laundry room. You should bring your own charcoal and lighter fluid if you plan to grill at the River.

Redford, Missouri, États-Unis

The cabin sits on a bluff overlooking the Black River. This is a remote cabin, deep in the woods with no neighbors. Area amenities include:
• Horseback riding: Black River Traditions
• Johnson Shut-Ins state park
• Elephant Rock state park
• Clearwater Lake near Piedmont
• Fort Davidson – site of Civil War battle in Ironton
• Sam A. Baker State park

The forest surrounding the cabin is adjacent to the Mark Twain National Forest. An abundance of large game are in the area including Whitetail Deer, Bobcat, Wild Turkey, Feral Hogs, Brown Bear, Bullfrogs, Coyotes and some say Mountain Lions. Elk are being introduced back into Missouri forest only about 30 miles from the Cabin in Ellington. Armadillos are quite common as well. Raccoons will certainly arrive if any food or drink is left outside.

The Black River hosts numerous fish with the most popular being Small Mouth Bass. Large Mouth Bass, Rock Bass, Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Sucker, Sunfish, Bluegill, and Perch are all common.
