Base Camp sits on 107 hectares of land at the head of the Waikouropupu Valley. This adjoins and is a portal to Kahurangi National park. You are surrounded by native flora and fauna including several cheeky wekas who regularly patrol the area. It’s also a perfect, private place to just rest and relax and enjoy the views up to the mountains and down to the sea.

Le logement
There's a cabin with a comfortable queen-sized bed and lounging area. An oil column heater keeps this well-insulated space cosy, if things get chilly. Though Base Camp is more attractive in the warmer weather, our cooler weather guests seem to find it comfortable and often extend their stay. The weather can be very chilly, but gloriously fine and sunny, which helps. If you're thinking of booking in the colder months, just be aware of the open air nature of the kitchen and ablution areas. If you're hardy, you'll be fine!

The separate ‘open air’ kitchen, dining and ablution areas are connected to the sleep-out by covered decks. Enjoy a bath under the stars on the alfresco deck. The glowworms on a track nearby provide a magical touch.

The kitchen is reasonably well-equipped and user friendly and has spring-fed filtered drinking water. We’ll make sure there’s plunger coffee and tea [including some herbal teas] to get you started, but please bring your own milk as we've found that there are just too many preferences to cater for.

There's a 20 amp caravan plug amenity which is also suitable for charging EVs.

Accès des voyageurs
Most of the driveway is shared with us and a neighbouring property, so be aware when driving on it. The driveway is steep in places, but most vehicles have no trouble reaching Base Camp. The driveway is not suitable for large camper vans. Contact us if you are in doubt. We have developed a hydroelectric scheme on the property. Occasionally, we need access to do maintenance on the intake which requires passing by the Base Camp site. If this is necessary when guests are present, notice will be given. Some of our vegetable gardens are at 'Middle Earth' on the drive to Base Camp, so you may see us toiling away in them on occasion.

Autres remarques
One of our aspirations is to find ways to lighten our environmental footprint. By choosing to stay at Base Camp you will be helping us in this endeavour. We have chosen a carbon-sequestering approach that allows the native forest to thrive while trying to eradicate the invasive wildling pines and other pests.

One of the pests over which we have little control is the sandfly population in the summer. These are endemic to New Zealand at this time of year and we have learned to live with them. There are screens to help exclude them from the cabin and kitchen. When sitting outside of an early evening it is best to cover up and/or wear repellent. There'll be some standard repellent on hand. If you want a more organic repellent, there is an excellent locally made one available at the Organic Shop in town [Tui Bee Balm brand].

Using this eco-friendly and unique hideaway as a base, you can explore all that Golden Bay has to offer. Even within the valley there are several opportunities nearby: visit the world renowned Te Waikoropupu springs; hike the Pupu Hydro walkway which starts at the bottom of our driveway; go canyoning down Campbell Creek; explore the Waikoropupu River at the foot of the property and discover rock pools for a quick dip on a hot summer’s day.

Base Camp River Track.
We have cleared a track to the river that borders the property. Follow it from the uphill end of the wooden bridge. Watch your feet as there can be rata vines growing across the path to trip the unwary. It's a walk of only a few minutes, so make it a leisurely stroll and enjoy the forest immersion experience. There's a small plunge pool at the end. Take great care when rock-hopping as some of the surfaces can be very slippery, especially if it's been raining or if it's been dry for an extended period. After heavy rain when the river is in flood, we suggest just going for a look and not to attempt to ford the river.

Chip and I were born in 1946 and 1951 respectively. He in New Jersey USA, and I in Perth Western Australia - children of the 60s and 70s, in other words. We came to NZ/Aotearoa in 1976. We were considered 'hippies' by the locals in those days and now are ageing 'hippies' who still try to hold dear to the ideals of trying to tread lightly on the planet. I am now retired from teaching international languages and English [mainly] at the local high school. Chip is a woodworker/builder/craftsperson with a workshop on the property. You will notice his artistic touch at Base Camp. He also works part time at a local mental health facility as a property manager. We volunteer in various community organisations like keeping the organic kitchen garden at the community hospital in good shape, supporting a local alternative education trust and keeping the community movie theatre viable and functioning. We travel to visit our families in Boston and Perth including mothers in their 90s. That pretty much takes care of our travel budget. We use Airbnb if we travel where family and friends can't accommodate us and have had great experiences so far and hope that we can provide similar for our guests.

We arrived up the valley 0ver 40 years ago to this piece of regenerating rainforest. Along with the sun, wind, rain and the seed-spreading birds, we have fostered its development and have enjoyed its peace and tranquility ever since. We live on the property, at a short remove, so if you need a hand, will be happy to respond to any queries by text or phone. We are also happy to meet for a chat if you would like to.
