A few recommendations of things to do or see.

Barter Books – Just fabulous. A huge second-hand bookshop in the old train station building. Home of the Keep Calm and Carry On poster (found in a box of old books). Easy to loose track of time. Great for breakfast and Tea. Lunchtimes can get very busy and when it rains too. 9.00 – 7.00.
Howick Hall – home and wonderful gardens of Earl Grey – he of Earl Grey Tea fame! Privately Owned
Craster, a small harbour village with a comfortable walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. NT and EH
Embleton Beach (my favourite) and next bay from Craster with a nice walk to Dunstanburgh to the right or Low Newton by the Sea to the left with the Ship Inn a good pit stop – serves home brewed beer you can’t miss it, at the end of the bay. A good place for lunch or dinner is The Joiners Arms at High Newton but may need to book – can also walk from here to beach.
Walkworth. A lovely village with a lovely ruined castle, nice shops. There is a quirky Hermitage here which is only accessible by boat across the river. NT
Amble is an old up and coming working class fishing village. On a nice day there is a lot going on at the harbour with small ‘Pods’ selling a variety of wares, food, art. Some nice places to eat too
Cragside House about 5 miles away – amazing Rhododendrons display when in bloom and house was first to have electricity NT
For something a bit different: Chillingham Cattle at Chillingham Castle. I haven’t been myself but I had a fascinating chat with the ex warden and promised myself I will go – very interesting and the castle, I gather, which is privately owned and completely untouched by any form of curation or officialdom seems to relish its quirky and raw, cluttered state.
The Treehouse in Alnwick Garden is worth wandering round. It’s free. You can walk past the entrance to the gardens itself and look in to decide whether you want to part with its extortionate fee. It is very commercial but we sometimes take a small picnic and sit in the area between the Gardens and the Castle – a fabulous spot where guinea fowl wander and the Director of the Transformer films likes so much he filmed there.
Lindisfarne Castle – great to go and walk around the castle and priory but I wouldn’t bother paying to go inside the castle as not much to see but the Priory is good. Must check tide times.
Seahouses is the harbour town where trips to The Farne Islands depart - very popular.
Bamburgh Castle – privately owned – on a lovely breach
Alnmouth Beach – recommend The Red Lion for lunch – great food and outdoor seating.
Low Hauxley Nature Reserve (just past Amble) Great if you like birds and, if they added a Giraffe or Hippo you’d think you were looking on an African watering hole (weather permitting)
Great coastal walks that you can dip in and out of.

I have arrived back in Alnwick after 3 years of traveling to help look after the family business. We own an Art gallery below the Bakehouse upstairs as well as an online jewelry company. I'm always happy to give pointers on the best beaches to visit, great walks to go on and of course where the best food is. As we rent the entire property i wont be in your way, however if you do have any questions i'm always easy to reach by phone or by popping into the gallery. I look forward to hosting you and hope you enjoy Alnwick and the surrounding areas as much as i do.
