Reassurance in these uncertain times concerning hygiene: Clean, Clean, Clean.
The Housekeeper at The Hyde would like to reassure all our guests regarding our cleaning regime. Those of our guests who have stayed with us previously are well aware of our exceptional standards. The Hyde receives a deep clean in between each and every booking which includes the disinfecting of all hard surfaces, handles, knobs etc. including door keys and deck rails. The bedlinen and towels are all professionally laundered. Our housekeeper works for us directly. She is not agency staff, is extremely proud of her work and may be regarded as the best in the industry.
We look forward to welcoming you to The Hyde for your holiday and we hope this goes a little way to reassure you of our dedication to providing you with a great experience.

Phillippa’s Guidebook
I came to Cornwall late in life and fell in love with it straight away. My partner, Johnny, has lived here since leaving London to surf in his early twenties. I was introduced to the area only eleven years ago and it was an eye-opener having spent my life travelling the world. Cornwall feels like another country – the pace is slower, the light is beautiful and, because the Gulf Stream passes right by, the ocean is that much milder. You’ll feel very connected to nature here – the sea, the rocks, the beach – and the people are welcoming and kind. It feels like a particularly vibrant area now, with new restaurants and art galleries adding to the cultural mix. Best of all, you can walk the Cornish coastal path for miles from Porthtowan to St. Agnes in one direction and towards St. Ives in the other. While the going isn’t always easy, it is beautiful throughout the seasons. The heady mix of deep blue sea, roaring waves and rich green fields, every corner, every turn is more breathtaking than the next.
As published authors, both Johnny and I could wax lyrical about the delights of Cornwall for page after page, but we will try and keep it simple. The big questions we are always asked is where we can rent a cottage, which restaurant and what should we do. Never before, as we come out of lockdown, have these questions been so important, so vital, so essential.
Of course, I recommend a stay at The Hyde, our eclectic little cabin that took us two years to build by hand. Set amongst the trees in a small copse on the hillside above our home, we’ve managed to create a very relaxed space where every detail has been considered with our guests in mind. We are constantly updating the cabin to keep it fresh and exciting. The Hyde is a wonderful place to return to after surfing, swimming, picnicking and relaxing on the beach at Porthtowan, or one of the many beaches to be found on the North or South coast of Cornwall. If the sun is behind the clouds on one side, drive to the other. If you like surfing, or are a total beginner, we have a surf shop in Porthtowan and Ryan, our son, will sort you out with all the gear, advise you where to go and what to do, and give you a private lesson on request.

Built on a UNESCO world heritage site in the heart of historical mining country complete with views of a castellated engine house, The Hyde is one of very few properties in this unique area.

The village of Porthtowan is the perfect, quaint seaside spot for breakfast at the Beach Café, coffee overlooking the ocean, or a drink at sunset watching for ‘the green flash’ (an optical phenomenon often seen here) at the popular Blue Bar. The Unicorn with indoor and outdoor tables and an adventurous menu serving fresh fish, including lobster, is a fun place to go after an exhausting day and, only a mile from The Hyde, is within walking distance if you want to leave the car behind, take a stroll through the valley and reward yourselves with a cocktail.

I will start with places to eat. I do suggest if you are celebrating a special occasion or just want to eat out, you make a reservation well in advance of your holiday to avoid disappointment. The two key dates for restaurants opening after lockdown are the 12th April for eating outdoors and the 17th May, indoors. I am only listing places we have tried ourselves. Cornwall has become more and more popular with lovers of good food looking for a few Michelin stars with Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth or a trip to Padstow and Rich Stein’s famous restaurants, but we will keep our list more local and we will update it from time to time.

Restaurants, Cafes, and Bars.

The Unicorn on The Beach, Porthtowan.
The Blue Bar , Porthtowan.
The Beach Café, Porthtowan.
Schooners, St. Agnes
The Porthminster Beach Café, St Ives.

We particularly enjoy lunch or dinner at the Porthminster Beach Café in St Ives for a treat. The cuisine has an Asian influence with Cornish ingredients. Everything is fresh, from the vegetables and herbs that come from the back garden to the Porthilly oysters and monkfish served with a tangy curry. We park up at the station at St Erth and take the train to St. Ives with a magnificent views along the coastline. The roads to St Ives can become gridlocked in summer. From there we walk into town to visit the galleries including The Tate which has a very good collection of Cornish art, or discover emerging artists at the Penwith Gallery. Babara Hepworth’s Sculpture Garden is a very worthwhile experience before relaxing at the Porthminster Beach Café . A new glass enclosed, heated terrace makes year-round outdoor dining a pleasure.
The Gurnard’s Head.
If you want to go a little further afield from St Ives, take the coast road – one of Britain’s most beautiful – to Zennor. The gastro pub has a very limited menu, which I like because it means that everything – mussels, grilled plaice – is fresh.

Hotel Tresanton, St Mawes. Another current favourite of ours for lunch on the terrace overlooking the sea, watching the yachts.

The Hidden Hut, Portscatho.
Summer is the perfect time to take the ferry from St Mawes across to Place Creek and walk either to St Anthony’s Lighthouse or the Hidden Hut, which serves excellent seafood chowder and freshly baked bread, overlooking the pristine Porthcurnick Beach on the Roseland Peninsula. It’s a casual spot, a favourite with locals who come for the bespoke espresso martini ice cream that’s made with Cornish clotted cream or, in season, an excellent elderflower cordial.

Take Away
Seasmiths Fish and Chips, Porthtowan
Pizza, St Agnes. The Cornish Pizza Company
The local village shop in Porthtowan is well stocked and the owners, Les and Tracey are very kind and helpful. There is a vegan shop next door. For very fresh vegetables and fruit and a wonderful range of foods, The Old Market at Chacewater is a great place to pick up everything you need for a French style picnic of bread and cheese and a bottle of wine.

Things to do.
There are lots of gardens to visit in Corwall including the world famous Eden Project. I keep this outing for cooler days when visiting the ‘largest rainforest in captivity’ feels like a day in the tropics.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan. One of the most mysterious gardens in England, Heligan’s two hundred acres are a paradise for the explorer, wildlife, plant lover and garden romantic.
Cornwall is renowned for its Surfing which became popular in Corwall more than fifty years ago. There is no need to go any further than Porthtowan and our own Tris Surf Shop where Ryan and Laura will look after you.
Discover Cornwall from a different perspective with Koru Kayaking, St Agnes.
You can hire bikes , including ebikes, locally from Elm Farm and follow the local trails. Granite way-markers guide you through the beautiful Cornish countryside. An excellent idea for getting to the beach when the car park is full at the height of summer.

I cannot praise the world famous, award winning Kneehigh Theatre Company enough and we have seen every production they have put on. Wacky, weird and incredibly talented, the critics love Kneehigh. They operate out of The Barns near St Austell but take their moveable theatre ‘The Asylum’ around Cornwall. We will update you when Kneehigh are back in action after lockdown.
In Porthcurno there’s the Minack Theatre, perched on the cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean. It was built between the two world wars and continues to put on plays, concerts and operas every summer in the open air. The stage is set with its back to the sea and the whole thing is very dramatic.
