Sarajevo Historic House is one of the best preserved examples of residential Ottoman architecture in Sarajevo, dating back mid 19th century.

A secluded green oasis in the centre of old town, Sarajevo Historic House affords you easy walking access to Sarajevo’s main tourist features (500m from Sebilj) while giving you the option to escape the crowds and enjoy the large private garden, two courtyards and views over the old town and the mountains.

Le logement
The house is set on 500m2 (600 square yards). Three bedrooms, ample communal spaces and a large kitchen will ensure you have a comfortable stay, while enjoying original period features throughout the house.

The house was originally built by Mustajbeg Rustambegović, a bey (chieftain or governor of a small province) from the Srebrenica region, and has been in our family ever since. Built using traditional materials and techniques, it exhibits typical architectural features of the time, including doksat (porch), male and female avlija (courtyards) and a large garden, originally used as an orchard.

During the conflict in the early 90s, the house sustained damage from mortar shells.

In 2000 the house was restored with emphasis on retaining its original features and character, while modernising it for 21st century living. The project was led by architect Amir Vuk, an award-winning Bosnian architect behind Hotel Pino Nature at nearby Mount Trebević.

Between 2000 and 2012, the house was the residence of Portuguese ambassador to Bosnia which speaks to its appeal and cultural significance. Today, the British and German ambassadors live in the same street, some 50 metres from the house.

Coffee at Ministry of Ćejf
You are in luck as the best coffee roaster in Sarajevo is just a five minute walk from the house. Head down to Ministry of Ćejf on Kovači street and enjoy their world class, in-house roasted coffee.

Tea at Teahouse Džirlo
If tea is more your thing, then some five meters down from Ministry of Ćejf you’ll find Teahouse Džirlo. Sit down and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while watching passers-by and listening to the sound of local kazandžije (coppersmiths) ply their trade.

Pizza at Pekara Mahir
The bakery at the bottom of our street makes excellent pizza. We highly recommend getting one close to sunset and heading up to Žuta Tabija (Yellow Bastion) to witness the sun setting over Sarajevo.

Ćevapi
Ask 10 Sarajevans where the best ćevapi in town are and you’ll get 10 different answers. We won’t get into that debate, but we suggest you try them as they are a local delicacy.

Pita at Burekdžinica Sač
Not as controversial as ćevapi so we can recommend Burekdžinica Sač in Baščaršija. They make their pita using traditional methods, baked under hot coals.

Essentials at Amko
If you walk down to the bottom of our street and turn right, you will come across Amko, a small supermarket where you can get your daily essentials.

Hi, my name is Nedim and I was born and bred in Sarajevo. The house you'll be staying at belonged to grandparents – I have been spending time here for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest childhood memories are from this house. As an architect passionate about Bosnian architecture and preserving our heritage I am thrilled to offer the house for you to experience life in a traditional Bosnian house.
