Le logement
Our historic Long Beach cabin was built as a fishing shack by a local (and roguish) judge about 1890. It's a snug, quirky little retreat on the main road that runs north from the mouth of the Columbia River. What we love might be disadvantages for some: no TV, no phone, NO WIFI, just lots of books, an old sea-chest full of old games and jigsaw puzzles, a fireplace, knotty pine walls and beachy kitsch. The grocery store and gas station right across the street have a sweet staff and all the last-minute necessities that make up for occasional noise and bustle. (A good quality white-noise machine in the main bedroom helps with road noise.) Our busy lives don't let us get to The Wrecktory as often as we'd like; Airbnb lets us share it. A note here: it's too small for easy storage of items that could endanger toddlers, it's on a busy main road and not all the property is securely fenced. We cannot book families with children under 6 and guarantee safety.

FALL IS beautiful at the beach. Go birding at Leadbetter Point or Beard's Hollow. Walk to a lighthouse. Fly a kite, go beachcombing, look for sand dollars at the north end of the peninsula, run on the beach, pick blueberries at Cran-Guyma Farm a mile away, hike a network of great trails, dig clams if it's open season, and if it's foggy or wet, get out of the weather at great museums and interpretive centers. Or plan a self-indulgent retreat with reservations at some great restaurants or cook in and relax by the fireplace with a book or game.

SLEEPS TWO OR THREE IN COMFORT. There's a standard double bed in the small main bedroom and, at the other end of the house, a twin bed in the little room off the entry. Below the twin is a trundle on wheels, which when pulled out fills the room (but is useful if you have two kids)! It can, in a pinch, accommodate two adults so long as it's understood this is close quarters personified. Bathroom is a three-quarter one; no tub, just a shower. What can we say. It's a beach cabin.

LIKE TO COOK? KEEPING COSTS DOWN? The kitchen has stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator, sink, coffeemaker, electric kettle, blender, coffee grinder. No dishwasher except you. Lots of mismatched dishes and basic pots and pans -- vacation-cabin stuff. Staples like sugar, seasonings, olive oil, flour, tea and coffee are on hand if you enjoy cooking on holiday. An antique gate-leg table in the living room can accommodate up to five or six settings by the fireplace if you have dinner guests. The market across the way has you covered if you want a pound of bacon at 7 a.m. or a bottle of wine at 10 p.m. (or need to beg a spare key if you've locked yourself out).

REASONABLE RATES: There's a $10 per person additional nightly fee for third and fourth guests (human and/or dog, see below), and a strict limit of four. Routine cleaning in preparation for the next guest, and laundry for sheets and towels, is included in your nightly rates; so far our guests have been great about leaving the place clean (doing dishes, cleaning up spills, stove, microwave and counters, starting a load of towels to help the cleaner manage her time), so we haven't added a cleaning fee. (Please help us keep it that way!)

COZY ATMOSPHERE. The cabin is so old that it's box construction; adding knotty pine in the living room, kitchen and small back bedroom has eliminated most (not all) of the draft. It was raised in the 90s for a foundation and some fill, and it's settled a bit unevenly -- hey, it's a cabin! Heat is baseboard, but the fireplace with its stone chimney adds to an eclectic, beachy decor: historic local and family photos, local art and nautical kitsch. There's a ramp to accommodate folks with mobility issues, but a step up probably precludes wheelchairs, and the bathroom's too small to be wheelchair-friendly. NOTE: Cabin and grounds are STRICTLY NON-SMOKING.

LOTS OF SPACE TO PLAY. The cabin sits on a double lot of grass and hawkweed which has served us for 35 years as Nerf baseball diamond, soccer field, picnic grounds, and cutthroat-croquet court. You'll find most of the old croquet set in the shed. When it was built, the cabin was just across Ocean Boulevard from the primary dune and beach, but after more than a century of shore accretion it's a half-mile walk through the dunes to the high-tide line. (If that's more walk than you want, you can drive to one of several beach approaches within a mile or so.) The cabin's a mile north of the center of Long Beach, a stone's throw away from a Mexican restaurant and four blocks from the beach's favorite hamburger take-out (look for the Tsunami Burger) and a nice golf course with a restaurant.

LOTS OF LOCAL ATTRACTIONS. Long Beach and the peninsula offer a boardwalk, the 8 1/2-mile Discovery Trail for walking or bicycling, kicky shops, far more really great restaurants than you can explore in a single visit, lighthouses, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, organic blueberry/cranberry farm and a regional museum, kite museum and even a cranberry museum -- not to mention Marsh's Free Museum with (eew) Jake the Alligator Man. One golf course is a few blocks away; another awaits 10 miles up the peninsula. It's a short drive north to historic Oysterville and the wildlife preserve at Leadbetter point, or south to Astoria. There are festivals and events year-round. You can swim at Waikiki Beach in Cape Disappointment State Park (please don't swim on the open beach -- tide rips and undertows claim victims every year) and you can drive on the long, long beach (but don't get into soft sand unless you have 4WD or a friend nearby with a tow truck!) and watch the tides.

PERSONAL ATTENTION AND ON-SITE HELP: Our local host and our cleaner will be sure the hot water's turned on and that there are fresh sheets on the beds and fresh towels in the bathroom. Our host is available by phone if you need help or advice, and our cleaner will check your departure for a prompt deposit refund. You can always ask for info from the friendly crew at the market across the highway. Early check-in or late checkout can sometimes be arranged if there's a day or two between guests.

CANINE COMPANION: If your dog is well-behaved and stays off the furniture, it's welcome with an extra $10 fee per night, limit ONE DOG please. You must advise us in your inquiry before you book and add a dog as an additional guest. A dog must not be left unattended in the cabin, and must be leashed if outdoors. There are bears in the area, and abundant deer, so your dog should be carefully controlled at all times.

Long Beach, Washington, États-Unis

Guests like its proximity to beach access (nice long walk through the dunes); the nearby market for last-minute needs; kind, quiet neighbors; and the general beachy-vacation-y ambience.

Carolyn's a writer/journalist/teacher and Don's a sort-of-retired Episcopal priest doing Hispanic ministry at St. John's Church, Olympia. We love people, antiques, books, classical music, gardening, eating fresh-and-local,unstructured travel, small hotels and B&B or self-catering cottages. We also love our funky Victorian beach place and our on-site host Terri. If only Shelton was close enough to meet all our wonderful airbnb guests! However, we enjoy getting to know our guests through e-mails and sharing information about favorite places. Recent travel? Santa Catalina, setting for a beach-read mystery Carolyn's just finishing!
