Le logement
When we bought this lot almost 8 years ago, I described the view as “The most beautiful view I had ever seen." Standing on the property...about 3.5 acres...Arenal Volcano dominated the landscape. And in the same view, there was Lake Arenal...not to be outdone, in front of the lower part of the volcano, was the National Park jungle...with a river, sight unseen, singing it's song 24/7. We bought the property the day we saw it. We built a beautiful contemporary home, with what you would expect in an American home...on demand hot water in every room, American plumbing where you can actually flush the toilet paper, screens on the windows and fans on the ceilings. The bedroom is air conditioned, although in the 5 years we have been here we have only used it once or twice. Fresh air is welcomed into the house so inside or out you can take advantage of the amazing Costa Rica weather. Come along on a verbal tour.

After you park your car in the carport, you will walk through the first of 7 hand carved doors (all designed from photos the owner has taken.) You are astounded by the view provided by the floor to ceiling glass walls that let you be a part of nature. Your dining room table is hand made from a tree trunk slab as the top and a root section as the base. The kitchen features a gas stove with 2 ovens, a large refrigerator/freezer, a walk-in pantry, coffee maker, rice maker, blender, mixer, food processor, toaster and most every other gadget you will need to cook absolutely fabulous meals. Your flat screen TV (with a satellite connection and some English programming) can be watched from the leather couch or from two comfortable chairs with ottomans. The chairs swivel 180 degrees to let you look outside through the floor to ceiling tinted windows while reading or relaxing. Your terrace wraps around the house giving you perfect views of Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal, Arenal National Park and the Children's Eternal Rain Forest. A stairway leads to a private tropical garden with walking paths for you to enjoy the plantings and fauna. There you will find banana trees, Pineapples, Mango trees, Avacado trees. wonderful eatable red hibiscus you can pick for your salads or tea, many flowering tropical plants, hummingbirds, flycatchers as well as tanagers...a wonderful place to linger. Back through the house there is a tiled carport (another place to sit and relax) with completely different views. As part of the first floor amenities there is a full size guest bath with a '"rain water" shower and beautiful glass art-deco sink.

Heading upstairs to your bedroom, you will find a Queen size bed. Your bedroom has a walk out covered terrace, a perfect place for sunrise and sunset, as well as a cup of coffee,or tea, or a glass of wine. Wake to the sunrise lighting the volcano with amazing colors. Watch the clouds rise from the forest floor (we are at the 2400 foot dividing line between the rain forest and cloud forest). Your view from the upstairs terrace takes in the jungle, lake and volcano. Your bath has a wonderful walk-in rain shower that blesses your body with spring water, heated by an on-demand water heater. There is a walk-in closet for your use as well.

Without even starting your car, you can swing on the swing by our driveway with a view of the area, walk toward our waterfall with two benches overlooking the area where you will find peaceful retreats. Walk a little longer to our private waterfall, (we even have boots you can wear), where we see monkeys about 50% of the time during an early morning walk, walk our private trail that leaves the back of our garden off the terrace and goes down a big hill and into the Jungle, then to a path to Walden Falls where two rivers join. An amazing peaceful place, where you can even take a cool shower under the falls. Also at the top of our drive is Parrot Hill, there you can take a horseback ride to anther big waterfall. You can even walk to supper at a wonderful restaurant, The Phoenix. We have been visited by three kinds of toucans, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and white faced monkeys. Our "White Hawks" circle the area most every morning between 8:30 and 10. One of our guests logger 73 different bird species without walking more than a mile form the house. Otherwise snuggle on the terrace, catch a quiet moment of serenity, or catch up on that book you have wanted to read. The air is fresh and clean, the spring water is tasty, and the setting is amazing and constantly changing.

Accès des voyageurs
PLEASE NO SMOKING IN THE HOUSE OR ON THE TERRACE. If there is the smell of cigarettes, Pipes or cigars anywhere, your entire security deposit will be forfeited and you may be billed for additional cleaning. We are renting you our home, and since we also live here, we have locked off our master suite and our office. You have full access and private use of our wrap around terrace, gas grill, terrace, living room, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms, bedroom and carport. The laundry is off limits, because the machines some idiosyncrasies, but if you need laundry done, we will do it for you for a reasonable rate per pound. Just ask. If you need something fixed, ask. Someone will give you a hand. Please, enjoy our home. Feel free to roam everywhere. We love garden visitors, the paths you see are all available for your use, even outside of our area. walk to our private waterfall, to the jungle (but remember, it is a jungle with bugs, snakes and critters). If you are walking off the roads and trails, wear the tall rubber boots, long pants take a walking stick and be careful. This is NOT a walk in the city park.

Autres remarques
Please remember, we are only set up for 2 guests. You will have lots of room to do as you wish. You have neighbors...two B&B's each about 2 blocks away. There are no shades on any of the windows, so we tend to go to bed early and rise early. The views are just too magnificent to cover with cloth. And no one is near you to see in anyway. Please consider a 4WD vehicle. the 10KM road from the paved road leading to the Arenal National Park entrance is gravel and often rutted and if raining, it will be muddy. On this road you will pass the park entrance and drive about 8KM almost to El Castillo. then a 1.2KM drive to our house. That road is up hill and also often challenging, especially in wet weather. Can it be done with a small sedan...probably, but you will be a lot happier with a 4WD vehicle.

One more thing...if you drive from San Jose airport, plan on 4 hours minimum to arrive at our house. YOU DO NOT WANT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO COSTA RICA BEFORE. So plan to arrive at the airport by Noon. We know, looking at a map, that you believe you can get here a lot quicker...trust us. We have made the trip many times and it takes a sloid 4 hours to get here. Let us know your flight plans as soon as you can. If you cannot arrive by 6 PM, consider spending a night near the airport or part way here in San Ramon.

El Castillo, Alajuela, Costa Rica

We strongly recommend NOT making a lot of arrangements for activities or specific plans until you arrive, EXCEPT for reservations for Zip Lining and Rafting. Both of these are often sold out. When you get here, you will find a red binder with tons of information on the house, the TV's, the trail to the waterfall, specific restaurants we love both here and in El Castillo and La Fortuna. We will share some of our favorite place for hanging bridges walks, hot springs (our favorite has many pools of varying temperatures, water slides, peaceful places, swim-up bar, lets you be there all day and includes either lunch or dinner for $26 per person). We will tell you about our most loved walk in the National Park area, a great restaurant for lunch if you choose to drive around Lake Arenal, eating places in El Castillo and the immediate area. This is rural Costa Rica, so you will be in a small town that mostly speaks Spanish, except for the various tourist places...they all speak English as well.

Susan and I are retired. We love to travel, and about 9 years ago, we spent 8 weeks in Costa Rica. We fell in love with the climate, the people, the wildlife, the peace and quiet, the escape from the hectic pace and political fighting of the US. 2 days before we left, we discovered what I described as "The most beautiful and spiritual place I had ever experienced." There was a piece of property for sale and the day before we left, we made a commitment to buy. A few years later we decided to share our unique property and home with select others...sorry, only two at a time. John is a serious photographer and Costa Rica is a photographer's paradise. While John snaps the camera, it is Susan who provides an amazing eye, sighting birds, noticing flowers and views while seeing things that will make beautiful photos well before John sees them. If you love photography, let JOHN know in advance for some great photo ops, and if you want a few days of photography with Susan and John contact us for a 3 day escorted photo experience near us with John as your tour guide.

Pendant votre séjour
It is unlikely we will be nearby while you are here, but you can reach us anytime by email if there are problems or something is not to your satisfaction. We do have a manager, Kelly, who lives in El Castillo and runs his own restaurant, La Ventanita. He will greet you when you arrive and check you out as you depart. Each morning, at a time you select in advance, our cook/housekeeper will prepare breakfast for you. The fruit will be largely organic, the eggs from free range chickens, milk, if desired fresh. Coffee will be Costa Rica grown. Lemon Grass Tea is available on request...of course grown in our garden. There is so much to do here...Zip Lining, hanging Bridges, rafting, kayaking, hiking, eating, hot springs and much more. You will receive a few letters after you book with tons of information about Costa Rica, places to go , things to eat, even how to rent a car here. Kelly will also send you a letter and is available by phone, text or a short drive to town. You will find a red binder in the house when you arrive. Inside you will find everything you need, telephone numbers, locations, names, information on how the house works, lists of our favorite places to eat, play and visit. You can spend a lot of time in this area and still have more to see and do. Kelly will not come to you while you are here unless you ask, and Lillian will be here only to do her housekeeping and breakfast cooking duties.
