Our Casa Abierta is secure and secluded - only 20 min. From Managua but feels far from the heat and noise. The deck has gorgeous views & house is open plan w/ loft, kitchen, living/bedroom. Lots of screens so it's very cool. Accessible to Managua in charming rural village next to forest walks on trails with views & wood-fired hot tub. *Note: Our place is extra peaceful because we *do not* have WiFi!

Le logement
My husband Paul and I built the Casa Abierta (Open House) Cabin for our families to use on their visits to Nicaragua. We are delighted to make this charming space available to other visitors. It's next door to our own house where we live with our two daughters. We are 45 minutes - 1 hour from the airport (depending on traffic), and can do drop off and pick ups for $25 if arranged ahead of time. There is a bathroom with shower and hot water. There is a double bed in the loft upstairs and a queen sized bed downstairs, both with mosquito netting. It comfortably houses 4 people. The Casa is open plan with a small kitchen (fridge, four burner stove with oven, sink & cabinets), dining table and living area. The cabin is very private, closed at the back to the road, but the front is screened to allow for maximum air flow. Paul is a furniture designer and maker, so there are tasteful touches of his work throughout the Casa. The wooden deck is the highlight of the house, it sits in the trees with a view out over the folds of the hills and dozens of tropical birds to spot. The Casa Abierta is very safe, the property has 24 hour security. It is close to nature walks, secluded and quiet, the perfect place for relaxation and retreat.

Accès des voyageurs
You'll have full access to the Casa Abierta cabin and its deck. You can do your own cooking in the kitchen at the Casa Abierta, or we can arrange for Nicaraguan-style meals to be delivered to you ($4 per plate). There are walks down in the garden, up the hill to our rope swing and up our ridge for views of Managua.

Autres remarques
The path that goes past the Casa Abierta was used in Pre-Colombian times as a road for hunting on the ridge and hills behind the house. We have found intact axe heads right near the Casa Abierta where our rope swing is. We can arrange a local guide to take you on walks ($4-7) - 1 hour, 1/2 day or full day. Walks with Dominga include visiting the local village, early morning bird watching, visiting sites of the old community oven and communal laundry washing, hiking the ridge for views of Managua, or visiting nearby villages. The guide Dominga is a story teller, so if you speak Spanish a walk with her is a real window into village life and lore.

UPDATE MARCH 2019
SECURITY SITUATION IN NICARAGUA

Many guests have contacted us to ask "How safe is it for foreign travelers in Nicaragua right now?" If you have followed the situation in Nicaragua you may be aware that the country experienced political unrest from April-July 2018. Throughout this time our village remained very safe and life continued as normal. It's now possible to safely travel throughout the country once again, both by private and public transportation.
In main cities, life is back to normal and it's safe to be out and about. Since the unrest, there has been an uptick in opportunistic crime, so tourists should exercise caution within cities. We are happy to arrange safe, low cost taxis with a trusted driver for you both within Managua and around the country. The situation may change in the coming months, feel free to write us with questions and always check the current situation with your local host.

Managua, Nicaragua

The village of Cuajachillo #2 is beautiful, safe, friendly and walkable. In August, Cuajachillo #2 celebrates own patron saint festival, La Virgen del Nancite, with a procession, traditional games like El Palo Lucio and bull riding.

Although I'm originally from N. Idaho, USA and my husband Paul is from Cork City, Ireland, we've been living in Nicaragua for 18 years. We have two daughters born and being raised in the small village of Cuajachillo #2 just outside of Managua. I work in sustainable community development in some of the poorest areas of the country and Paul runs a small woodworking shop in the village. Our girls attend the local public school. We enjoy being involved in our community and love to meet communities wherever we go.
