Historic Site
“Matera is a city and a province in the region of Basilicata. The town lies in a small canyon carved out by the Gravina (small stream and ravine). Coordinates: 40° 40'N 16°36'E. The place to visit is the historical centre called 'Sassi' considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993, along with the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. In October 2014 Matera was declared Italian host of European Capital of Culture for 2019. Until the 1980's the Sassi was considered an area of poverty, since its dwellings were, and in most cases still uninhabitable. Now due to tourism this area is now being regenerated. There are many restaurants, cafe bars and hotels. There are many beaches with Lido Bizzarro which is good for children. Torre Canne is a close beach and is safe. ”
