“Driving Creek was originally the "Top Town" during Coromandel's gold rush years. It had its own school and shops and was it's own separate community. Since then it developed a reputation for being an area for art and creativity. The area to the south of the road was developed by the famous local potter and engineer Barry Brickell into what is now one of the regions top attractions. Originally built to access clay in the hills above his pottery, Barry's narrow gauge railway became a popular tourist attraction as it winds its way up the Kaipawa ranges to the "Eyeful Tower" via many bridges, cuttings and tunnels. The railway now boasts the regions first zipline tour, a 3 hour journey through native treetops descending from the Eyeful tower. People now enjoy Driving Creek for its peace and serenity. Nested in native bush with Tui, Kereru and Kaka passing by.”
