  • Kuchu was terrifically friendly, and I had a great dinner with him made with locally grown vegetables and chicken that was very inexpensive. His guest house is high in the mountains near a gorgeous part of the Japanese coast. Don't count on getting cell service, though he has WiFi. The house is very traditional, but he's been remodeling it to have a bigger kitchen, and it's quite spacious and clean.

  • It's a nice guesthouse in the countryside. Prepare well to arrive, because no cell phone network to help you to find your way. We had the pleasure to eat with Eriko & Teruyuko. They are still renovating the house, but the minimum is good (Bath, toilet, kitchen, living-room, bedroom). The place is already great, and will become awesome when it will be fully finished.

    alexandre2016-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • The place was excellent for relaxing and experiencing the Japanese countryside! Teruyuki and Eriko were very friendly and thoughtful. Eriko took us to the forest and it was amazing to come to such a natural forest. I could also watch stars at night. This place is your choice if you are a nature lover and want to relax.

  • A great place to escape the pace of the larger cities in Japan. Beautiful scenery and great location to walk and ride bikes. A rental car would allow you to explore the area further but we enjoyed being car free and the trip to Sonobe station was a breeze from Kyoto.

    Emma2016-12-18T00:00:00Z
  • We travel Japan with two children. The kaya villa is a great place for family as they provide bicycle for kids and we can ride safely in this fabulous scenery. Yusa is very nice to answer us promptly and all staffs can communicate efficiently in English is really a place point. We have a great stay at kaya village and will definitely recommend this place to visitors coming to Japan.

    Yuen Feong2016-12-09T00:00:00Z
  • Yusa-san was able to communicate effectively in English with us, that is a plus point for foreigners. The surrounding around the villa is very picturesque and we had a great time exploring the neighborhood. The villa itself is very roomy and homely.

  • We loved this cottage experience! Fresh and modern inside with a traditional look on the outside, it was the perfect country retreat. It's just an hour outside of Kyoto (a city which seems crowded with tourists in comparison), and it's well-worth the drive thru picturesque Japanese countryside and villages to enjoy a peaceful refuge in Miyama. The view out the kitchen windows was a beautiful bamboo grove and the front glass doors opened up to the tranquil, lush fields and mountains beyond. Our son enjoyed running down the country lanes and over a bridge spanning the river. We loved the cedar bathtub and spa-like shower room. The kitchen was modern, spacious, open-concept and well-stocked, including a full-size fridge and stove range with pots and pans. A lovely breakfast with bread, local milk, eggs, cereal, and coffee was included. Yusa was kind and helpful and provided instructions in English for appliances as well as an emergency cell phone. We all said we would love to stay here again when we return to Kyoto!

    Julie2016-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • My family and myself love the apt. I brought my two kids (1&2 year old) here and it's very safe for them to run around in the big grass around the house. My parents love it since it's so refreshing to live in such a quiet and natural neighborhood with full equipped house to make ourselves really comfortable. They also provided good equipment so you can actually do some local stuff like walking in the forest and neighborhood. The apt itself is very comfortable and they provide good amount of food for breakfast. We did bbq and it was so much fun. The only thing is that we only stayed for one night whilst I realized how much more we can do if we stay longer. Will definitely visit again in the future. I highly recommend people who would take good care of this amazing property to stay at this house.

    Jenny2017-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay in the country with our kids here. The staff made it so easy for us, picking us up and dropping us off where we needed to be. The house was charming, bikes available to explore and a nice break from the city. The cooking class was really fun for all of us and very authentic.

    Erika2017-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • Although our stay was brief, it was wonderful to get away and spend time in such a beautiful, tranquil place. Local food was very good, though I wish we'd had time to try more. The owner, Yusa, was great. Friendly, welcoming, helpful, kind, quick and responsive to requests, even picking us up to save us from the rain on the last day!

• When we arrived at the place, we were very upset as it was very messy and cold. The accommodation is very basic (you need to know that) and the price is way too high (we were 6 persons and paid more than 200 euros per night). However, Juliano is a great host and a very nice person. He was very welcoming and he adapted quickly to our needs and preferences. He spared no efforts to make our stay pleasant, helped us out to have a nice dinner and he took us out to spend new year's eve at a local temple to play the gong and eat traditional soba, unforgettable!!

He is a lovely person and outstanding Air B n B host! We highly recommend the walking tour of the Ashiu forest. The house was fantastic, and a really unique experience for our family. It's absolutely gorgeous, and very spacious. Taka took time showing us around, and showed us the water music home in the room behind the house too. • We had the most fabulous couple of days at Hideo's thatched cottage. We took full advantage of his guided tours. We have 2 children - 10 and 12 - and they learned so much. Our 12 yo loves cooking and loved joining Yukako in the kitchen each night. Our 10 yo son is very proud of the chop sticks he crafted. Traditional accommodation, with all ammenities and extras like tea, coffee and cereal. Wouldn't hesitate to book.

  • Amazing! Without any doubt, Heido-san deserves the super host! Charming, humor, warmed-heart! He even spent half days to make a wood house(toy) with my daughter, it is really funniest experience for us. Yukako-san, his wife is also nice, kind and funny host. Both of them made us feel at home! We will be back again.

We had a great Japanese experience and are great dishes. All the rooms have heater so it is easy to get warm if it's a bit chilly. The house is clean and beautiful:)!Hideo was our guide too and took us to all the nice places!! Yukako cooked great dinners:) I would really recommend everyone to experience Japan at their place. You get polite, funny and generous hosts and amazing food:) We can't wait to go back:)!!! Thank you Hideo and Yukako:)) Hugs Carmy, Steven and Giuliana

  • A slice of rustic countryside, a quiet place far from the maddening crowds but just 30 km from Kyoto. Lovely host Hideo and Yuka with their two friendly dogs certainty made us feel welcome. The surrounding little towns and cypress forests with windy roads and magnificent river : so atmospheric and evocative of a quieter country life. There were only four of us so there was a lot of room - if you have a party of 6 it would be just nice. We loved the kitchen, the heated table and sleeping on futons. Please note that there is only one bath and a separate toilet plus another separate sink. We had a rented car and drove everywhere. Hideo is certainly a great host who responds quickly to every message.

  • They were such a sweet couple! Very accommodating, friendly and kind, and thoughtful, too! We were pleasantly surprised to see tooth brushes and other amenities in their house, like a real Ryokan in Japan! The house was very spacious and clean. The whole area was serene and beautiful. We did bicycling around. What a gem! Definitely would like to come back!! :)

  • Hideo and Yukako were wonderful hosts! Really nice, fun people with cute dogs (the golden retriever was really great to play with, very funny :) Definitely try one of Yukako's meals at least once, and the day trips are worth it too (the waterfall and cedars were my favorite). Went with my mom and she left her vitamins and they not only sent them to us in Osaka, but also gave us some small gifts. Wonderful location, home, people (and dogs!) Would absolutely recommend

  • What a gem! We had a wonderful experience staying at Mina's place - from the ultra comfortable bed to the delicious food and amazing hospitality. Mina was an excellent guide for our first visit to Japan. The location was perfect for our needs - a quiet and local experience with an hour bus ride to the city. We enjoyed riding bikes in the area and visiting local hotsprings, as well as our day trips into Kyoto. The best part was having a cozy and welcoming home to come back to at the end of the day for great food and conversation. Mina's place is beautiful and fun, the food is delicious (some of the BEST Japanese food we've had), and the local area was very refreshing. We enjoyed getting away from the city and the natural beauty of the countryside. Mina was always available to help with directions, bus arrangements, and local recommendations.

  • We were greeted by chappy and moe at the shuzan bus terminal in kyoto after a 2 hour ride from kyoto station and they took us to their house by car. The 2 are very relaxed and easy to get along with. They offer bicycle hire, tours, breakfast, lunch and dinner and theres a lot to see if you're interested in visiting the rural/country side of japan. Would def recommend if you don't mind a really quiet vibe.

  • This place is wonderful! If you are traveling through Japan and wish to spend some time with locals then I highly recommend. It is located in a beautiful mountain area and the scenery makes the bus ride feel like nothing. I managed to commute to Kyoto and back easily with the JR bus. They also offer activities while staying there. Everyone was very friendly and polite. Most important, the food is amazing!! I think young travelers or married couples will enjoy most of all. Overall, I had a great time and wish I could have stayed another day.

  • Wow!! I can't begin to describe what a wonderful experience it was to stay at the organic farm Jam House. It was one of the best homestay experiences I've ever had. The two couples who run the guest house/farm/music venue are SO cool, sweet, and warm, and they welcomed me in like family. I hope we will be friends for years to come. If you are looking to really experience Japanese culture, for a retreat in the beautiful countryside, and to make new friends, you must stay here. I feel so lucky to have found them. Here are a couple (of the many) reasons why I loved my stay: They are amazing cooks! I've ended up food-touring Japan, and the meals I shared with them are the best I've had here. We ate all meals together - either at the kitchen table, the kotatsu (heated table on the tatami mat floor), in the outdoor seating area, or in the SUPER COOL music venue garage space. It's $5 for breakfast and lunch and $10 for dinner, and I would recommend eating all meals at the house. Everything is made with organic, healthy ingredients - and lots of love. We started each morning with homemade croissants, fresh baked bread, organic salad greens, a selection of local jams, and freshly-roasted fair-trade coffee (coffee-lovers: they roast the green beans themselves). Lunch was Japanese curry, stir fry, or a noodle dish with a fresh salad and miso soup. Dinner was communal style nabe (like clay pot stew where you cook thin pieces of pork and vegetables in the broth - so fun and yummy), and tempura vegetables and meats. Also they are super accommodating of vegetarianism or veganism - or any other dietary restrictions for that matter. They are very accepting and welcoming of people from all over the world and all walks of life. Communication was great. Mina and I exchanged many messages beforehand and she answered all my questions within minutes. Mina picked me up and dropped me off at the train station. She also took me into town anytime I needed something. We went on two tours - one of the traditional town of Miyama, and the other of a local temple and beautiful waterfall. Both trips were so fun, exciting, and helped me to get a better feel for the area. I definitely recommmend taking them up on the tours. I have been visiting temples around the country, and this temple was my favorite. We were the only ones there. It was natural, artistic, and incredibly serene. Mina told me about Shintoism and the gods and imperial family honored at the temple. It was so cool to go to a temple with such a knowledgeable person. The waterfall is an exciting and scenic 20 minute hike. The water is crystal clear and the falls are beautiful (this is coming from someone from Hawaii who seems out waterfalls whenever possible). I highly recommend this trip; In the summer this would be an...

  • Aikoko and her housemates are the most wonderfully generous people I have met in a long time. After 5 weeks of traveling, it was so good to just feel at home. Great healthy food - paradise for a vegetarian or anyone with a special needs diet. I made a small additional contribution for all meals - which I recommend if you are sticking around during the day without a car. I did yoga everyday and walked to the nearby small but beautiful shrine. Mountains, clean air, and fabulous new friends who transformed Japan for me into the days of communal living and sharing in the 60s & 70s in USA. The hills are filled with artsy people as well. If you want real life and real friends, come here!

  • Akiko's visiting Tokyo so we stayed with Mayuko and her family. It's an amazing experience. The room is big and comfortable, very Japanese style as well. Mayuko prepared tea and the delicious dinner for us, her husband Hiro drove us to their place and took us for a walk, and her sweet daughter Tao is the sweetest and cleverest kid I've ever made. We had an unforgettable dinner togerther, and thanks to their friend Kei, we visited some local shrine and village around. We highly recommend everyone to visit this area if you are coming to Japan, and stay at Mayuko and Akiko's place for more than one night!

  • A retreat away from the turmoil of the world! After travelling an hour of mountain road from Kyoto station, I arrived alone with my backpack in the beautiful Keihoku. It was right before sunset. The little japanese town looked so peaceful and undisturbed. Akiko and Jun welcomed me with a wonderful japanese traditional cuisine. During my three days of stay, I truly experienced what we called an authentic Japanese culture, and it was an impressive experience. At night, Akiko and Jun, the amazing couple who travelled all around the world, took me to see the fireflies for the very first time of my life. Unfortunaltely, we did't have the chance to take any clear photo of those little luminous creatures, but they will definitely stay in my memory. In Keihoku, nearly any scenery could be a shot in Miyazaki Hayao's cartoon. Come to Keihoku and visit Tao's house!

  • Thank you Akiko-san and family (and baby Tao!). Words can hardly describe the experience of our stay at their own beautiful little world. It was truly an escape for my girlfriend and I after our previous nights in Tokyo. We were surrounded by hills and dense forests, friendly local community, and our final day waterfall hike was our icing on the cake! We had our own mini Japanese garden at the front porch of our room, and our tatamis were the most comfortable beddings we've had in our trip to Japan. Akiko-san and her family made us feel at home almost immediately after we arrived. The meals they prepared for us were amazing! We will never forget our evening drinking sessions with Hiro-san while jamming to Bob Marley's music until late night. We miss you guys and baby Tao already. If we ever go back to Japan, we'll make sure to visit you beautiful people again!

  • We all had a memorable time in Keihoku. A spectacular bus ride to a spacious house with warm and welcoming hosts. The food is crazily good. We also enjoyed a local tour for the day exploring local sights with a small amount of trekking thrown in. It was great to escape the city. A stand-out experience from our trip to Japan.

  • This place was such an amazing find! We weren't sure what to expect with this farm stay but it was above and beyond our expectations. Masa and his family were amazing hosts and we really enjoyed our time sharing (fantastic) meals with them. The house is lovely, a beautiful, traditional Japanese home and the surrounding countryside was gorgeous. Masa gave us a great tour of the village and the local artists, including his wife who has beautiful pottery! Highly recommend staying for at least 2 nights!

  • This is a truly japanese hospitality. Me and my friends really dont know where to start or rave about this AirBnB. We are arriving to shuzan by bus and mr 正則 help to picked us up at the bus station. the hospitality doesnt stop there. He also brings us around the village to check out few of his friends artworks and houses. We really enjoyed the walk. As we dont have the car to drive around, he brings us to the mart in the evening to pick up few things from there. As we are also muslims and it's a ramadhan months, he really ask us and confirmed what we can and cannot eat and what time we can break fasting. Mrs 正則 cooks very good japanese food almost like a complete kaiseki dining and we left feeling so full and with happy stomach. At night, all of us went to see a fireflies sightings (June-July) and it was nice. We also plays traditional japanese games with their son Taiki. Oh, i forgot to mention about the veggies we got to pick up on our own. we were so happy. This airbnb is not just an accommodation rentals, it feels like we have had a new friends and families from Japan. Their hospitality exceeds the limit. We were really happy to stay here. The comfy tatami bed left us sleeping so peacefully. Thank you mr 正則 for everything. We really appreciate it. It's just that, there is a lot of place to see nearby shuzan. We recommend to drive your own car to fully experience this area.

  • If you are looking for a farm stay in Japan - Banja Farm is a must. One of the most culturally rich experiences I have ever had. The house and the scenery is more than beautiful and the food is better than a restaurant. The family is so lovely and worldly and artistic. And for one brief moment you feel you are living in Japan with friends.

  • Our experience at Kei's truly did not disappoint - we had a really good time with Kei, Hiro and Midori! I was travelling with my parents and Kei was very patient and considerate to our needs. He customised a one day tour for us to visit the wholesale fresh seafood market, sake brewery, a quaint and beautiful traditional roof thatched farmhouse village and had a paranomic view of the Sea of Japan. Hiro even prepared his special omu rice for the first time as I was craving for it! And we got to taste Midori's delicious cooking. We enjoyed our daily evening conversations and laughs over dinner. Thank you Kei, Hiro and Midori for the great happy memories, I'll definitely recommend you to visit Keihoku if you have a chance; it's worth the scenic bus ride from Kyoto main town!

  • Staying at Kei and Midori's house was wonderful. Although it was a relatively short stay, there was something special and magical about it. Kei and Midori are both very warm people and make great hosts. We have spent two cozy evenings with them with lots of laughs. There was so much to talk about, it was like spending time with very good friends we hadn't seen in a long time. Also we've learned so much about Japanese culture from them. We spent a very nice day in Keihuko area which is really lovely. We enjoyed the beautiful house, the nice tatami room and Midori's food. We all felt right at home and our kids are still talking about Kei and Midori. We hope to come back!

  • From Kyoto station, we're heading to a place that no one knew...and it's called "Keihoku". Half and hour later on the JR bus, me and my husband, perceived that "We've made our right decision". We reserved 2 nights with Kei and finally asked him to extend our stay for 2 more nights...and still felt these were not enough! Kei and his girlfriend; Midori, are very great host, ever :) They made our first trip to Japan so amazing! They spent their time with us sharing conversation in many topics during our meals, taking us to places and to meet people in Keihoku area. We're so impressed that we'd experienced the REAL Japanese spirit...not as seeing in a postcard or guidebook. Kei is a very decent guy who always be able to answer any questions you may ask, while Midori is a very proper girl who can cook well and make her place looks welcoming all the time. We could say that we were so lucky and happy that we found them...and will definitely go back to Keihoku and stay with them again! PS: At our last day, the season there just changed from winter to spring...we could feel that it's a big meaning for all the Keihuko people maybe for the Japanese too...noticing blooming flowers, feeling warm from the sunlight, seeing people riding bicycles, and kids playing baseball. We LOVE Keihoku!!!

  • since last yr's visit to Heikuoku,Kei has been already one of our best friends in Japan. The beautiful nature and well preseved culture impressed us so much, everything is just like in Miyazaki (宫崎骏)'s movie. This time,Me and my friend took our daugters for a 4-day natural and cultural adventure in Heikuoku, hosted by Kei,which is absolutely an amazing and unique journey for us,esp. the girls. Hiking in deep forest, shopping in fish market, playing on seaside, trekking and fishing in the river, experiencing local cultures and architechture in local village, learning from outstanding craftsman, chatting with various artists, obseving Bambi(wild deers)in the night…… all these are all unique and truely impressive. The highlight is definatedly Kei,a “language nerd” he called himeself, master ed over 4 languages with profound knowledge and experiences. just like a walking Encyclopedia of Heikuoku, helps us discover another Kyoto!

  • I had a great time staying at Sayuri's wonderful house. The room is very nice and every detail of interior reflects Sayuri's sense of arts. If you want to have a great time, i can higly recommend staying here. If you have an JR Rail Pass you can reach Sayuri directly from Kyoto Central Station (it's JR3 Line to Shuzan). I really enjoyed my stay. Thank you!

  • Sayuri-san is an awesome host, she has a great heart and is always willing to help you. The room is big and comfortable, styled like a traditional japanese house. The house also serves as her atelier, which is very interesting because you get to know more of Sayuri's habilities in handcraft designs. I'd strongly recommend people to visit her place, which enjoys quietness and a great location in the mountains near Kyoto. I will certainly return here in the future. TIP: the JR pass allows you to travel free by bus between the town and Kyoto. Very useful

  • Without any hesitation our best Airbnb experience in Japan. Of course we loved the relax zen house provided and the small villages surrounding it. We rode our bicycles around the area and discovered nice restaurants, beautiful mountains and a local onsen. If we come back again to Japan one day, Atsushi's place in Hiyoshi will certainly be on top of our list.

  • Perfect stay! It was one of the best airbnb stay we had so far. It was comfortable stay for 7 people. One toilet (plus one male toilet) could be trouble for big group, but we can managed that within our group. We drove there and direction is very accurate. Location wise, short walk to train station, nice morning run route, great onsen facility nearby, convenience store is 5 mins drive and Miyama Village is 20 mins drive away--just perfect for us. Lastly, lovely host with welcome tea and delicious snacks -- and cute garden. Highly recommended.

  • Excellent acceuil.

  • Kei is a super host ever and I feel so lucky to meet him.He speaks English much better than anyone else I have met in Japan. Thus talking with him was a real pleasure. We have fun talking with each other, discussing the culture differences and historical events. Some topics considering the relationship between China and Japan are sensitive, but kei just stands on the neutral side and his opinions were really agreeable. As a tour guide himself,he took us visited the Keihoku area a whole day.We visited old temples, local houses and enjoyed the quite and artistic scene of Japanese countryside so much.Kei also explained the religions, the history and culture of Japan along the way. I personally think anyone who wanna see another side of Japan should come to Keihoku, where you will embrace the nature and feel quite and relaxed from the inner heart. Also, for anyone who is curious about Japan,Kei is a host that you don't wanna miss. Thanks to god,Thanks to the power of nature that brought us to Keihoku.I will remember this journey forever.

  • Like a lot of reviewers said, staying at Kei and Midori's place was a highlight of my and my friends' trip. The place is cozy, clean and beautifully designed. Kei and Midori were wonderful hosts, to say the least. They arranged for us a tailor-made trip in Kyoto, where we visited Joshoko-Ji Temple, Obama town's fish market, and a beautiful shrine in the country side of Kyoto. We enjoyed the traditional home-made breakfast and dinner. Everything was up to perfection, would definitely recommend staying here.

  • Staying at kei and midori's house was a wonderful experience. If you are looking for somewhere different, quiet and escape. This will be the place. Though the weather was not so good, we still had a great time spent with each other. They speak very good English, there wouldn't be any problem between communications. The room is spacious and comfortable. Supermarket is within 15 mins walk.. Strongly recommand this place.

  • Reached the house at about 7pm, and was warmly welcomed by Kei. He speaks perfect English, so no trouble communicating with him. Was looking for dinner, and we went over to a friend's house, where we had the best Japanese hotpot ever! Got to mingle with his friends from the area and get to experience Japanese hospitality :) Had to leave early the next morning, so I didn't get to see more of the area, but will try to come back the next time :) Highly recommended!

  • We had an amazing experience at this lovely house in a little village surrounded by nature. It was so nice to take a break from the city and this place is so close to an amazing waterfall which we hiked to one day and a beautiful old temple where we got some of the best photos of our trip the next day. One of the best things about exploring the area is that it is so beautiful and rustic. Plus it's very peaceful and quiet making it a great place to wind down after doing lots of sightseeing in Kyoto city. The hosts are two of the nicest people that I've met in Japan. We felt very warmly welcomed and after coming back home from a day of exploring we went to the supermarket together and even had a little dinner party with some of their local friends who were also super cool and fun to hang with. Kei and Midori seem to really enjoy sharing info about the area and tips on things to do in Japan. We stayed up chatting and enjoying great locally grown food. When we went to sleep in our comfy bed, we could sleep with the sounds of nature right outside the door, with the river right next to the house. We even saw a family of deer just before bed. A chance to see nature, hang with really nice people and enjoy local food and really great conversation. This was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Japan.

  • I feel very lucky to have come across Kei and the exceedingly beautiful town of Keihoku. It has been a highlight of my trip thus far in Japan. It was a wonderful experience and a great contrast to (the lovely though sometimes hectic) Kyoto city, which is only an hour and twenty minutes away by bus. I stayed for 3 nights and my only regret is that I didn't stay longer. Kei was very accommodating and his house is very comfortable. We visited a local festival and local artisans and galleries. As an artist myself, I really envy their beautiful environment! It's definitely a wonderful place for those who appreciate handicraft. I'm already conspiring to move here one day. Kei and I also visited the nearby town of Miyama, particularly for the reason of seeing Mr. Shindo's Little Indigo Museum. It was a real honor to visit with such a talented and dedicated person and the town with its thatched roof houses is definitely worth seeing in person. Keihoku has a great sense of community, though I wouldn't have been able to experience it to such an extent without Kei. His passion is really inspiring and I enjoyed all of our conversations and time spent together thoroughly!

  • If you want to understand Japanese culture and another side of Kyoto, Kei's accommodation is definitely your best choice. This is truly the best days I had in Japan, its difficult to find a host who can speak several languages, share critical cultural or political views with you, of course he will adjust the itinerary according to your wish and your curiousity. Kei is s(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)nformative that he can answer most of your questions about japan. We shared views on learning languages, musics, books, food, sake, we were more like an old friends than a host-client relationship. The experience during these two days was incredibily amazing as i got a chance to visit a woodcraft artist and local old Japanese house, listen to their own story with the help of Kei, as he did all the translation for me, even taught me japanese. The house is clean, quite and super comfortable. its just the place i need to release pressure, i am sure i will come back in the future and introduce Keihoku & Kei to my friends.

  • We had an amazing time staying with Mina and her family. They're all beautiful people and genuinely kind. Was a pleasure meeting them and experiencing country life away from the city (but not too far!). Already looking forward to coming back to stay again ☺️
