It was home to Iroquois,the first American bred horse to win the Epsom Derby and the great foundation sire,Bonnie Scotland,whose descendants include Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Native Dancer, Big Brown and California Chrome. Belle Meade was owned and operated by the Harding-Jackson family for nearly a century from 1807 until 1906. Today their home is restored to its turn of the century appearance along with several original outbuildings.

It is fitting that the "Athens of the South" is home to the world's only full-size replica of the ancient Parthenon. Forty-six Doric columns encircle the building. The largest bronze doors in the world, weighing 7.5 tons each, stand at the East and West entrances. Featured is Athena Parthenos, the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. Sculptures and friezes are modeled from Elgin Marbles at the British Museum in London.

There are several miles of walking trails with various degrees of difficulty to choose from. One of our favorites for getting our heart rate up a bit is the Ganier Ridge Trail. For a more leisurely stroll we opt for the Lake Trail. If you go in the early morning or at dusk be prepared to see some wildlife along the way. NOTE running is only allowed on the paved road and not on the trails. So, if you're looking for somewhere to do some trail running we'd recommend Percy Warner Park in Belle Meade instead.
