Begin at Timberline Lodge and take the trail east or west. The trail loops around the whole mountain like a belt for 40 miles, so for a day-hike, you’ll go out and back in one direction or the other. The best part is that you can return to the lodge for a beer or cocoa after your walk.

About 7 miles roundtrip, it’s a subtle uphill climb the 3.5 miles to the falls. Along the way, you get multiple, beautiful views of Mt. Hood’s peak, and the falls are absolutely worth it. Note that there’s a Sandy River crossing on a log, which may not be easy for children or people with physical challenges. This is a lollipop trail with an out-back portion and a loop.

This is a gorgeous hike along the Salmon River through towering trees and thick ferns. You can dip your toes in the water and picnic by the river at numerous points. It’s got small up and down hill portions, but it’s mostly flat. It’s an out-back trail that’s suitable for all ages.

This trail begins in the thick, ferny forest on a lovely, easy trail, but a couple of miles in. the trail climbs in a series of switchbacks. The journey is rewarding; you arrive at a very typical Mt. Hood National Forest lake, where you’ll find crawdads, frogs, and more. The lake is filled with plants and isn’t great for plunging in.

A blue and white ramen place, this restaurant rivals Portland in terms of food creativity and quality. West on Highway 26. Pass Welches/Thriftway intersection, and find Koya just past a large green sign for Mt Hood Rentals on your left.

We know this place from Alberta Street in Portland and loved it when it was there. After their roof caved in, the owner headed for the mountain and continues to produce thin-crust pies with high-quality, seasonal ingredients in an inviting space. Left on Highway 26, and the restaurant is on your left, just past Mt Hood Market.

Come early in the evening to avoid a wait, and in winter, sit by the fireplace if you can. In summer, the outdoor space if lovely. This place often has music and the BBQ is a must.

Great place for pizza, but has a very extensive menu. This is a quirky place with lots to look at on the walls, and they have a sweet scavenger hunt for the littles.

Great place for a beer and some higher-quality pub food after a day of skiing and hiking. This place can get crowded, so be ready for a wait if you arrive at peak times.
