World-renowned sculptress Elisabet Ney was the first resident of Austin's Hyde Park. She built her home studio Formosa in 1892, and friends purchased the property and gifted it to the city after her death in 1907. Ms. Ney was known for challenging traditional ideas, and for hosting great parties at Formosa. There she worked on sculptures of legendary Texans like Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston, as well as European notables, including King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and Otto von Bismarck. The grounds have been restored to its native Blackland Prairie habitat, and ruins of the swimming hole she built in the creek bed can still be seen.
