Our local pub, and a favourite place to eat, the food is delicious. Indoor and outdoor dining and a cosy bar. You can walk through the fields to get there (sometimes this is like taking your life in your hands though, as lots of cows!) or drive 10 minutes.

Drinks & Nightlife

Pub by the river with a campsite. Beautiful views. Gets very busy around bank holidays. Food-wise, they do a good egg and chips..

Shopping

An eclectic market with cheap plants, ex-army combat clothes, dog cushions, fruit and veg, old records, and lots of bric a brac. Don't miss the indoor market which was based on a design by Sir Terence Conran! (I wouldn't say it was typical of his work though...?) Open on Weds, Fri, and Sat, 9am - starts to get quiet after lunch.

Parks & Nature

Big old hike to the top of the hill (but several different routes up - some more arduous than others). Spectacular view from the top. It's known locally as Rodney's Pillar http://www.oswestry-welshborders.org.uk/attractions/united-kingdom/powys/criggion/iconic-attractions/breidden-hill-rodneys-pillar/

Local legend Humphrey Kynaston (Shropshire's answer to Robin Hood) once lived in a cave with his horse in what is known now as Nesscliffe Country Park. The caves are now closed off to the public (it was more like one room carved into the sandstone rocks) but you can take beautiful walks in the area, and there's a pub at the foot of the hill. http://www.oswestry-welshborders.org.uk/attractions/united-kingdom/shropshire/nesscliffe/landscapes-near-oswestry/nesscliffe-hill-kynastons-cave/

Arts & Culture

beautiful gardens, and not too enormous a castle. take a picnic or there's a National Trust cafe. In the summer they sometimes offer open air concerts/performances. To find out why this castle is so important, listen to Episode One of the podcast Empire (William Dalrymple and Anita Anand)

This is a small, run-down sort of castle, with plenty of spirit. Each generation who owned it imprinted their own stamp of eclectic wit and warmth - one family wrote poems about each of their staff, from youngest garden apprentic upwards. The last owner liked to run sightseeing tours around the country, he was also an actor, and known for being frugal - a real character. It's one of my favourites.

Beautiful grounds at this 13th century castle. In the summer they sometimes offer open air concerts/performances. We once saw The Importance of Being Earnest there and it was pretty awful and freezing cold. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/chirk-castle

Sightseeing

One of my favourite spots, the small house of the "ladies of llangollen" was a legend of its time, with a legacy that still attracts many thousands of visitors every year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladies_of_Llangollen. You could easily spend a day in Llangollen, as there's a lot to do - canal, canoeing, and plenty of tea shops and antique shops, as well as the music festival for which the town is famous: the international Eisteddfod http://international-eisteddfod.co.uk/

One of my favourites, a depiction of life in Victorian times, in a small mining community. Get your picture taken in victorian costume, stock up on candles; all the Victorian shops are proper going concerns so if you want to get a dress made or find a stone mason, you'll love it here. Plenty for kids and adults to do - and the town of Ironbridge also has a lot ot offer. Book for Guy Fawke's night - they have a beautiful firework display in the "town".

Getting Around

Train station! Across the road from the train station is a mini-cab office, also a very good cafe, and an organic veg/wholefoods store. So if you DO decide to come up by train (and I wouldn't recommend it, unless you plan ahead and get Tesco.com to deliver your food, and perhaps bring a bike) this is your nearest station..
