Take the tram to the top, it's over 8000 ft above sea level, in the winter there will probably be snow and in the summer it will be pleasantly cool, at least 30 degrees cooler than the valley for. From the top of the tram it's only a 5 mile hike to the top of San Jacinto, 10,000 feet.
