Sightseeing
I believe it's the oldest building in San Diego and the first mission established in California.
It is still a fully functioning Catholic Parish and you can attend daily mass there if desired.

This is where most locals take in all their water sports. It's a large body of water that's calm enough for swimming, jet skiing, and water skiing. In the summer months its surrounding parks are filled with locals enjoying the summer weather.

Parks & Nature
If you're considering some time either at Sea World or the San Diego Zoo, the Zoo is the more bang for your buck. It's relatively inexpensive to enter (comparatively) and you can get lost there the whole day.
In the summer, we're there at least once a week with our children.

2920 Zoo DrIf you're considering some time either at Sea World or the San Diego Zoo, the Zoo is the more bang for your buck. It's relatively inexpensive to enter (comparatively) and you can get lost there the whole day.
In the summer, we're there at least once a week with our children.
This is a local spot where many people enjoy walking, running, or cycling. The Lake has a paved path that goes around its shores; cycling is permitted on this path.
I believe it also has fishing and non-powered boating. There is no swimming allowed in the lake.

This is a "Regional Park" but it's not swings, slides, and grass fields. Mission Trails Regional Park is a large expanse of land, filled with trails and places to explorer. You could get lost here for a day if being out in nature is what you like to do.

Sea Port Village is a area on San Diego Bay that features shop and restaurants. It probably should be defined as a "tourist trap" but even locals go down here for the atmosphere of being on the harbor.

This is right down the hill from our house. It features a putting green, driving range, and batting cages. It's less than 10 minutes away and is a nice place to take a breather.
