Food Scene

This restaurant is warm and cosy, with panelling, low ceiling and hanging hops. There are tables and also banquette seating and the menu is varied and good quality, but not cheap. Quite popular with locals and visitors alike and it has an extensive wine list.

Sightseeing

Much photographed 15th and 16th century buildings which have featured in quite a few costume dramas in film and TV, some of which hang over the street. The street is cobbled and houses the Burgage Hall, The Heritage Centre which was once a school until the 20th century, The Painted Room (medieval) and Butcher Row museum. If you look carefully in the Heritage Centre, there is an old photo of sheep being driven past 128 The Homend!

Shopping

The building itself is a surprisingly situated modern architectural gem in one of the many little alleyways of Ledbury and the high quality goods are mostly locally made homewares - natural materials and countryside themes feature extensively.

Arts & Culture

Situated in Murch Marcle about 10 minutes drive from Ledbury, Hellens Manor is one of the oldest, most continuously occupied private homes in the country, now owned by the Munthe family. The Manor dates back to the 11th century and has not been over-restored, so still retains a magical, other-worldly atmosphere which is quite unique. There are guided tours on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons between Easter and when the house closes at the end of September. Highly recommended.

The Masters House is a late-medieval open hall house recently restored at considerable cost. It houses the Library and all sorts of information about Ledbury through the ages. Well worth a visit for a detailed look at an iconic architectural piece of history.

Drinks & Nightlife

Another piece of Ledbury history, The Talbot in New Street, still has bullet holes embedded in the door surround from the Civil War. Has a great bar area and a small restaurant with Jacobean wood pannelling. Popular landlord.

Known for their real cask ale (CAMRA pub of the year in 2013), and being a real, traditional, old-fashioned pub with decor and casual attire to match! The building itself is very old, prob 16th c., but the locals of all ages are very friendly, informal and welcoming. Standard pub grub is good value. Music on Sundays after 4pm and on Wednesday evenings usually with local jamming musicians playing blues/folk and it can get packed.

Parks & Nature

The Deer Park at Eastnor is owned by James Hervey-Bathurst. You can park just opposite the gates to the castle and walk into the park, which also has a bowling club. Dogs are welcomed but must be kept under close control, particularly during pheasant breeding season. The walk continues on to the duck ponds some half a mile away. Lovely views. You can also visit the Castle and grounds which is open from Easter to the end of September most Sundays and Bank Holidays, and then during August every day from Sunday to Thursday.

The River Leadon has a riverside walk and picnic area which is adjacent to the bypass. The entrance is on the Ross Road 50 yards from the Full Pitcher. Can get very muddy in wet weather, but good for walking dogs.

The Malvern Hills is an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the Herefordshire Beacon, or British Camp as it is sometimes known, is of great archaeological significance as well as a stunning vantage point. It is a steep climb to get to the top, but you will be rewarded with a 360 degree vista over the Severn Valley to the Cotswolds in the east and in the far distance to the west, the Black Mountains and Wales. The Iron Age fortifications surrounding the peak are pretty impressive too. Great for dogs, but check there are no sheep grazing the area. Sally's kiosk opposite the car park is a welcome place to stop after your descent!
