A country pub with beer garden, play area and outside seating as well. It's cosy and has a great wood burning stove in the winter. The food is variable because it keeps changing hands but generally is pretty good, sometimes excellent.

The Middlewood Way was once a railway line but is now a very pleasant bridle way. It runs between Macclesfield and Marple, passing just at the end of our road, so is ideal for walks, dog walks, bike rides etc. It can be muddy underfoot and you might well meet some local riders. It makes for a great circular walk with the Macclesfield Canal, and is the easiest way to get to the Miners Arms pub from our house if on foot.

A very interesting museum with working steam engines all the way through to space shuttles. Excellent for children, there's a science gallery with lots of things to fiddle with like at the science museum in London.

A theatre in the round, they put on an excellent variety of plays through the season and attract major acting talent. The environs of the theatre are very interesting and have a bar, coffee shop and gift shop.

The largest Mall in Europe. Free parking. Also has a cinema and indoor mini golf and lazer quest. There's a massive food hall and other coffee shops interspersed between the high street stores. Debenhams, Selfridges, John Lewis etc.

Quarry Bank Mill was remarkable in the Industrial Revolution for the way the owner looked after his workforce. The mill is still running with working water wheel powering working weaving machines. The tour is fascinating and takes in the school house and the local houses built for the workers.

Impressive Tudor residence, packed full of history. They are quite good at activities to keep the children interested too. It might be National Trust, I'm not sure.

Not National Trust, because it's still a private residence. The house is enormous and impressive and the gardens are beautiful. They host an annual exhibition of modern art in the grounds. There is also a children's adventure playground, farm etc. Well worth a visit. Chatsworth was the set for Mr Darcy's house in the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice.

The rock in the area means that for centuries Castleton has been the place to mine for Blue John stone, which is unique to this area. A trip up to the English Heritage castle is worth a go too.

One of our nearest seaside resorts. When the tide is right there are long sandy beaches, where you can find quiet spots if you don't wish to be in the touristy zone. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants for the end of a day by the sea.
