Food Scene

Very good and affordable restaurant. A favorite for expats. Along with the great food, they have a nice selection of wine, beer, Mezcal, and cocktails. Great for lunch & dinner. Sometimes live music. Located up the alleyway “Alameda” off of Plaza Baratillo. Look for the chocolate shop Xocola in the corner of the plaza, then walk up the alleyway on the right side, it will be about 15 meters in front of you.

Located upstairs in the beautifully renovated building Casa Cuatro, is this good French/ Mediterranean Restaurant & Bar. During the day there is a great fresh salads and quiche buffet (plates are weighed before sitting down). At night there is a good dinner menu and fantastic cocktails made with fresh ingredients and live music some nights also some Sunday afternoons.. (Usually Jazz) The building is addressed #4 Calle San Jose and is located between Calle Carcamanes (street near Plaza Baratillo) and Calle Sol. There is a small church across the street and the Post Office is adjacent to the building. Look for the not-so noticeable sign “Casa Cuatro” and walk upstairs.

This is a top rated restaurant in Guanajuato located in a family home in the neighborhood of San Javier (outside the center of town on the way towards Valenciana). They use local ingredients and old Mexican recipes. Prices are higher than other restaurants in town but the dining experience is well worth it. Need to take a taxi & should call for a reservation (473) 733-9059.

Step back in time in this classic favorite, old authentic bar with afternoon botanas (Mexican tapas). It is in a little quirky old building filled with antiques. They play old Mexican music and have old photographs on the wall. It is located up a very tiny alleyway just behind Cafe Bossa Nova in Plaza San Fernando. Take the tiny alleyway directly behind Cafe Bossa Nova and Clave Azul will be in front of you as you walk through this tiny callejon.

Step back in time and dance the night away (till dawn) in the traditional and legendary ʻLa Damaʼ. Its setting is traditional and authentic as well as creative and artsy. This is the best place for late night Latin dancing (salsa, cumbia, Cuban...) Things donʼt get going till at least 10pm. Across the street from Templo San Francisco and La Santurrona Cafe. Next to the Modelo store you’ll see an entrance that leads you directly upstairs.
