Dependable and cheerful neighborhood wood fired oven pizza-and-smart-cocktail spot. They have an exceptional happy hour from 5-6, 10-close. If you’re in the mood for a low-drama, stylish yet quick meal, this is the closest place, that just happens to be a very nice option.

Flavors both innovative and familiar, imbuing decadently rich ice cream, this is again just a few blocks away. If two flavors sound good, no need to get two scoops, just ask for a split scoop for the same cost and size of a single. The line moves quickly, and if they have Yeti or Orchard Blondie (a caramel-brownie and large chunks of peach and raspberry) on their constantly changing seasonal menus, these are not to miss options

If you happen to wake up early and ravenous, the 5 Spot is your best bet for a lumberjack’s ration of brunch. The line can get unwieldy in the later morning, at which point you’re probably better off looking further afield, but for the earlier rise, with kids, it’s the best pick in the immediate area. They have an hilarious rotating menu that influences the décor, which is changed roughly every quarter, or whenever the owners get tired of the current theme

On the other hand, if you want to grab something sweet to go, Seattle’s Top Pot will serve us delicious doughnuts along with decent coffee. Great for a tailgate treat, they have the only Seahawks license in town, and can give you a baker’s dozen, festooned with Seahawks-colored sprinkles. Crusty outsides with soft cake-y insides: doughnut perfection

Be prepared for a wait, as there is no reservation book, but for the freshest and wildest seafood, this is the first recommendation for our money. Oysters shucked at a furious pace for a packed house, but if it swims, this is where to get it. The rest of the menu is similarly bright, seasonal, and screams freshness. BUT YOU WILL WAIT

Ignore your local friend that said you should go to Paseo. After a bizarre workplace lawsuit, the owners of the once-famous Cuban gem, Paseo, sold the restaurant in Wallingford and opened Un Bien. The latter is now where to get bread that can only be described as special, sandwiching succulent slow roasted pork. The former lives on outdated internet reviews, and slings fairly uninspired, vaguely Caribbean food

these restaurants have little to do with each other, but for their common theme of elevated, modern southeast Asian cuisine. If you’re looking for lemongrass scented meats and rethought Saigon street food, these are both bustling and fun/trendy options north by the Amazon campuses in South Lake Union, or down in Seattle’s rapidly changing Central District

Seattle’s long history of Japanese travelers and residents is distilled in this market-adjacent restaurant of unparalleled elegance and simplicity. Shiro Kashiba is Seattle’s foremost sushi purveyor, and this, his upscale arm (Shiro is the other), is the finest sushi in town. Fun fact: Kashiba trained under the Michelin-starred Jiro, of Jiro Dreams of Sushi-fame. We’ve put ourselves in the chef’s capable hands for the omakase, and have come away astounded every time at both the dynamic surprises and the perfect classics

I always get excited when I’m driving down by the water on the idiosyncratic peninsula of West Seattle, found south and west of downtown. Ma Kai’s boisterous nouveau Hawaiian food is both unpretentious, fun, and great to share in their waterside beach shack. Favorites include their Katsu Sandwich (a breaded pork chop with a tangy sweet katsu sauce and a crunchy Asian slaw), the kim chi fried rice, and their aloha fries, and island-inspired de facto poutine. I’ve seen it phase on and off the menu, but I’m pretty sure it can always be made available. Pair it all with a rotating crew of draft beers

Another crazy wait that can sometimes reach 2.5 hours, but put your name into their University Village and Bellevue locations and they’ll text you when your table is ready. The soup dumplings made this Taiwanese chain a sensation, but we also always order the garlic green beans, won ton tossed in a spicy chili oil, silver dollar sized Shanghainese rice cakes fried with slivers of pork or chicken. Tip: if you’re a small party, and have no children, ask to sit in the bar area, which serves the full menu, and can literally shave hours off your wait time

The awning has the wrong name, and the line is chaotic, but the biscuits n’ gravy here are worth it. You’ll feel like you ate a boat’s anchor afterward, but…in a good way?

Drinks & Nightlife

The Puget Sound is home to one of America’s finer winemaking regions, the Columbia River Valley. If you hop in your car and head to Woodinville (please plan for a safe driver home!), some really fine tasting rooms await. There are two main hubs. One, the Hollywood district: the intersection at 148th Avenue NE and NE 145th Street. The other, the Warehouse district just off NE 195th Street and Woodeinville Snohomish Road. The vast majority of the various tasting rooms are all an easy walk from each intersection. Our favorites include DeLille (Top 100 on Wine Enthusiast/Wine Spectator two years running), Chateau Ste. Michelle and Columbia (the largest grounds/rooms), Patterson Cellars, Po
