It is really funky, enjoys fabulous views over the reserve to Kuaotunu beach and offers the best wood fired pizzas in NZ as well as other great food options for non pizza fans. The adjoining cafe does a great range of GF and vegan cabinet foods, excellent coffee and the same outlook to the sea.

A really quirky cafe with great food and coffee, a fabulous garden setting located just across the road from Flaxmill Bay beach. It's about 1.5 km walk from the Whitianga ferry on the Cook's beach side of the harbour.

Rated one of the best beaches in the country. Beautiful white sand, Pohutukawa trees for shade and a fabulous place for a picnic and a swim. Access is via a 20 minute walk around the rocks from the northern end of Whangapoua beach. This requires good walking shoes. Plenty of parking and public loos available at the end of Mangakahia Drive but no facilities at New Chum's itself. If up to a challenge, scramble up the top of the hill from the highest point of the steps that lead up from the coastal track for the best spot for a selfie to make everyone at home really jealous! If you reach the beautiful Nikau palm grove you've gone a bit too far.

Beautiful coastal and bush walk. The road there is a difficult drive as it is not tar-sealed. 2 options, either up the western coast starting at Fletcher's Bay or the eastern side from Port Charles starting at Stony Bay. N.B. There is no connecting road so it's a 5-6 hr walk if you go there and back. Alternatively walk in from Stony Bay to the lookout to Great Barrier Island, have lunch and return the same way. The other end starting from Fletcher's Bay is steeper and open farm land to the mid-way lookout point. There are 2 tourist operators in Coromandel Town offering pick up and drop off services. We recommend this option for cautious drivers!

A beautiful and wild beach in a storm. No houses and great for a walk. N.B. It's a dangerous beach with no lifeguards so be very careful if swimming. Better to go to nearby Little Bay for a swim.

Entertainment & Activities

The most iconic and popular tourist activity in the whole Coromandel District established many years ago by local artist and philanthropist Barry Brickell to source clay for his pottery. It's a fabulous trip through native bush with switchbacks, double decker bridges, tunnels and a great lookout at the top with views back to Auckland. Kids young and old love this ride! There is also a working pottery, art gallery and an excellent shop to acquire works from several local artists .
