The Station Hotel has a rich history as part of the Rothes community stretching back more than a century. In its heyday, it was the place for the rich and well-heeled to stay while travelling north to fish for salmon in the bountiful River Spey. So restoring the site to do justice to that heritage, while creating something contemporary that would act as a hub for the local community, and attract visitors from further afield was no small task.

In the heart of Speyside Malt Whisky Trail lies the Speyside Cooperage, the only working cooperage in the UK where you can experience the ancient art of coopering. Since 1947, Speyside Cooperage has produced the finest casks from the best American Oak. In 2008 the Cooperage was sold to the French firm Tonnellerie François Frères. Today the cooperage continues to work and produce the age-old product, still using traditional methods and tools. Each year, it produces and repairs nearly 150,000 oak casks used by the surrounding Speyside Whisky distilleries, as well as distilleries throughout Scotland and the rest of the world. The Cooperage is the only cooperage in Britain with a visitor centre. Enjoy a journey through the lifecycle of the cask, see the highly skilled coopers at work, try it for yourself with the mini casks or simply relax and enjoy the gift and coffee shop.

Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its island castle ruin and stunning surroundings of forest and hill, has seen human use for many centuries. It has also long been a much loved favourite of countless thousands of visitors. No surprise, then, that in 2010 it was voted Britain’s Favourite Picnic Spot in a poll organised by Warburtons to commemorate National Bread Week. You can explore the area at your own pace; a short stroll from the car park will reveal dramatic views of ancient pine trees, mountain and castle. A walk of 3 miles (5 kilometres) along some of the best low level walking paths in Scotland and part of a Rothiemurchus network of trails, will take you all the way round the loch. You may encounter some of our exceptional forest wildlife; Red Squirrel, Scottish Crossbill and Crested Tit make their home here. In summer, Ospreys may occasionally seen scouting the waters for fish.

Developed in the late 18th Century, the charismatic village of Tomintoul was built by the 4th Duke of Gordon who established the new planned settlement with its regimented grid-like layout on this "bleak and barren moor". Its layout hasn’t changed much since. The Duke’s demand for a good Public House in the centre of the town no doubt helped to secure its popularity. Situated at 234m above sea level, Tomintoul is renowned as the highest village in the Highlands.

Lochindorb (from the Scottish Gaelic: Loch nan Doirb meaning "loch of the minnows") is a freshwater loch north of Grantown on Spey in the Highland council area of Scotland. On the island are the ruins of Lochindorb Castle, a former stronghold of the Clan Comyn and is built on what now is said to be an artificially created island. It is also a popular spot with fishers and birdwatchers, the latter of whom come to see the local black-throated divers and greylag geese. At the southeast edge of the loch there is a small patch of coniferous forest. The "Wolf's Lair": Lochindorb Castle at Lochindorb in Badenoch, stronghold of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan. Lochindorb is home to an array of wildlife and is a popular fishing and birdwatching spot. The loch was traditionally a game loch with a large native brown trout population however there has been a dramatic decrease in numbers. Pike have been recorded in the loch for over 20 years and were illegally stocked. Pike have been used as an excuse for the demise of the trout, however anglers have been removing large numbers of trout due to no bag limit or permit system being in place.

Distilleries

Speyside is whisky heaven! By far the largest (by number of distilleries) and arguably the most famous of Scotland's whisky regions, this breathtaking area sits in a fertile valley of rivers and secluded glens and is home to over half of Scotland's distilleries. Speyside is arguably the driest and warmest part of Scotland and the fertile farmlands in and around the region are ideal for growing barley, which when combined with soft local water tumbling down off the mountains, produces some of Scotland's best-loved malt whiskies. Sample the remarkable flavours of Speyside's fine malts as you explore the region, and follow the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail™ - the world's ultimate Scotch whisky experience - comprising of nine 'must-visit' sites including seven working distilleries, Dallas Dhu historic distillery and the Speyside Cooperage - the only working cooperage in the UK.
Built in 1958, Tormore was one of the first new distilleries to appear during the post-World War II Scotch boom. The beauty and uniqueness of its architectural design were recognized in 1986 when the distillery was granted listed building status, despite being less than 30 years old. Tormore Distillery was designed by the renowned architect, Sir Albert Richardson.
Sir Albert Richardson (1880-1964) was one of the leading architects of his time in Britain, and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. He was known for his architectural style which combines neoclassicism with modernism. This style is apparent in the design of the Tormore Distillery where the traditional stone balconies and the copper roof, which has gradually weathered to a deep green colour, sit alongside clean, sharp edges and minimalist gardens. Tormore Distillery is also home to some architectural quirks, in particular, a clock that plays four different Scottish songs every quarter of an hour.

Nestled deep in the beautiful Spey valley, Ballindalloch Castle has been the home of the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546. Indeed, Guy Macpherson-Grant is the 23rd generation of his family to live at the Castle. Throughout those generations, this much loved Highland estate has upheld tradition while continuing to grow and look to the future. The latest addition to the range of activities is offered at Ballindalloch Single Malt Distillery. Returning the family to the distilling traditions of previous generations, Ballindalloch Distillery embraces an approach to whisky making rarely seen today. A visit to Ballindalloch Single Malt Distillery is much more that just another distillery tour. Here you can become involved in the art of making whisky.

For 20 years William Grant nurtured a dream to make the ‘best dram in the valley’. With the help of his family, he finally achieved that vision. In the summer of 1886, with his seven sons and two daughters by his side, William set out to fulfil a lifelong ambition. Together they began building his Distillery by hand, stone by stone. After a single year of work it was ready and William named it Glenfiddich, Gaelic for Valley of the Deer. William’s passion, determination and pioneering spirit continues to guide us today. Glenfiddich is one of the few single malt distilleries to remain entirely family owned and is now the World's Most Awarded Single Malt* Scotch Whisky, a true reflection of our founder’s innovative nature, passed down through the generations. When you visit, you’ll discover tall copper tuns, great wooden washbacks and stone-walled warehouses filled with earthy, aged aromas. We are proud to be one of the last independent distilleries in Scotland, with the freedom to maintain our tradition of innovation with a pioneering spirit.

Distillery founder John Duff travelled to Kentucky and South Africa in pursuit of whisky adventures, returning to Scotland in 1898 to build the BenRiach Distillery. It is in his adventurous spirit that BenRiach boldly approaches the art of distillation and cask maturation. We call it BenRiach Maltology® As progressive Speyside whisky distillers, BenRiach crafts unpeated, peated and triple distilled malt whisky and holds some of the most experimental casks in Speyside. Small wonder the distillery team have nicknamed the distillery ‘The Lab’. We are one of just two remaining distilleries in Speyside to distill whisky using malted barley from its own onsite floor maltings, a time honoured method that is celebrated for one month each year. Welcome to BenRiach Maltology®

Benromach was established in 1898 and experienced many closures and changes of ownership before it was purchased by the Urquhart family, the owners of Gordon & MacPhail, in 1998. The family’s dream to own a classic Speyside distillery saw them re-equip the site before it was re-opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1998. At Benromach their Single Malt Scotch Whisky is handcrafted and made slowly, the time-honoured way. Using the finest natural ingredients 3 distillers orchestrate every second of the distillation process by sight, sound, touch and smell. A friendly tour guide will proudly show visitors the boby mill, mash tun, 4 wooden washbacks, 2 copper stills, spirit safe, filling room, dunnage warehouses before finishing the experience at the Visitor Centre, which is stocked with the full Benromach range and many mementoes. And, of course, you can enjoy a tutored tasting of the Benromach 10 Years Old, or other expressions from the award winning range.

It is the range of produce that impresses at the Spey Larder. As the name would suggest, it is the perfect place to stock up on all the deli larder basics, both continental and local - Connads cheese is a favourite, as is Ola rapeseed oil. A large selection of locally-caught fish, artisan cheeses and pâté is stocked, as well as fantastic bread. It has a good selection of local real ale and local wines, as well as wines from more far-flung destinations. Open 0900-1730 except Sunday.
