Recreation

A must see and experience. Enjoy a GORGEOUS five mile or less walk or bike ride around Chico Creek. This is half of the total Bidwell park, which is 3,670 acres (15 km2), nearly 11 miles (18 km) in length, making it the third largest municipal park in California and one of the 25 largest city parks in the United States.[1]

Lower Park hosts the famous Sycamore Pool which is known better as the One Mile. As you can see, it is a beautiful, large swimming pool that is fed by the Chico Creek coming from upper Bidwell Park. Lush lawns and large trees create a perfect place to hang out, picnic and play in between swimming sessions in the cool waters. This pool features it’s famous bridge which links the two sides to the 1 mile loop. This lower Bidwell Park makes a 5 mile loop between two dams. It has a nice paved road and is a great place to walk, ride bikes, picnic and swim.

A child’s Wonderland. Great for families to hang out and let their kids run around and play safely in an enclosed area. It features all sorts of play things for all ages. It is nearby to swimming so if you ever get hot you can just take a short walk to the creek and cool off.

Sightseeing

Meet John and Annie Bidwell, Chico’s founders. Their accomplishments are so profound and extensive, that you'll simply need to do a tour of their Mansion to see and hear for yourself. Their intelligence, generosity, and vision are humbling and inspiring. This is a tour I could do once a week. ( As a child, I wanted to live there! Actually, I still do!)

Chico State's campus is simply gorgeous. Take a walk along the shaded creek and walkways, enjoying lush landscapes, architecture of old and new buildings, and splendid array of tree species. The student bookstore is open M-Th. Check their schedule for live performances in their Laxson Auditorium.

Food scene

Noise is literally a stones throw away from our home. It serves yummy handbuilt burgers that is famous for its cheese lab that has fried edges. Yum Yum Yum! The burgers are huge and so are the fries and onion rings. It’s just a great burger joint and a simple stroll away. Great to order to go and bring back to enjoy on the porch or backyard.

This is our go to Mexican food joint and it is only eight blocks away. Super reasonably priced and simply delicious. My personal favorite is the chili rellenos plate. They have room to sit and eat but it is also a great thing to get to go.

Secret trail brewery simply makes great beer. It’s a wonderful hangout place at sunset. They usually have a food truck outside so you can enjoy a fun meal as well. Bring some cards or board games and just hang out.

Where would Chico be without Sierra Nevada brewery!? Ken Grossman has been an outstanding citizen to our community. Not only does his company produce world famous beer but he donates to amazing causes including tuition to Butte College for all local high school graduates! Sierra Nevada draws crowds for its beers, taproom and restaurant, Oktoberfest celebrations, and classy musical performances in it’s Big Room. Go to their website and see if they might have any performances you can enjoy while you’re in town. You can pay an added fee to enjoy a tasty dinner. While you are there, you can enjoy a tour of the brewery and shop in their gift shop to get an iconic sweatshirt.

You can’t say you have really been to Chico unless you’ve had a scoop of Shubert’s Ice Cream. And you got a try their famous “Chico Mint” flavor. It was nominated as one of the United States best ice cream places! It took third place. Schuberts features ice cream and candy. Simply walking into the cool, air conditioned shop is a full sensory experience and will take you back in time.
