La migliore pizza di Monti e una delle migliori a Roma. Piccolo locale da asporto con pizza al taglio ad alta digeribilità, lievitata per 72 ore, e fritti caserecci. Pretty good pizza. The crust is the real winner. Staff speaks good English and they're open late. Cash only.

At weekends a queue marks the entrance to this elegant chandelier-lit pasticceria, much-loved since 1916. Its crostate (latticed jam tarts) are iconic, as are its berry-topped crostatine fragoline di bosco. Take a number from the machine next to the register, order when it's called and then pay. A maritozzi con panna (sweet bread bun filled to bursting with whipped cream) is the downright wicked speciality to order in the next-door cafe, which also serves good coffee.

Freshly baked pastries, fruit tartlets, pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) and focaccia fill display cases in this famous bakery, and there's also a tavola calda (‘hot table’) where an array of hot dishes is on offer. Order at the counter and eat at bar stools between shelves of gourmet groceries, or sit on the terrace for waiter service.

A fantastic introduction to both Italian wines and wine tasting itself. Very laid back but also informative. And the sommelier really let the conversation flow to all parts of Italian culture that we wanted it to. A great couple of hours!

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important and best preserved of Roman churches dedicated to the Madonna. It rises on top of the Esquiline Hill and is the only remaining example of early Christian architecture, even though it has over time been further embellished.

Actually, this place was built up in the 2nd Century; this building of the Church Santa Pudenziana was erected in the 4th Century. We are looking thus at more that 16 centuries of history. The main sight inside is the beautiful 4th century mosaic over the altar (see picture). Beside this mosaic, Santa Pudenzia has much to offer in decoration and atmosphere. A curious fact is, that the right side of the church started as a Roman bath house in the 2nd century. You can still spot the layout of the stalls. Outside, the history of the church is made clear, because the building is now far under street level, the small piazza can be reached by a staircase. Interesting is the bell tower in north Italian style; this bell tower was added much later, in the 13th century.

Situated in the old baths of Diocletian just off the Piazza del Repubblica. This is a church that is well worth a visit (can be combined with Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Maria della Vittoria) converted under the guidance of Michelangelo.

Le Guide ai Quartieri

One of Rome's old residential neighbourhoods, Monti retains a bohemian edge and is a great spot for an al fresco coffee, to savour the local street food, and shop for alternative fashion. Once this was the Suburra – a crowded inner-city district nestled right up against the Empire's centre of power, and eventually divided from it by a long wall, designed to protect the Forum from the regular fires that would break out in a district colonised by craftsmen, chancers and sex workers. Today its ochre-washed houses on cobblestone lanes are prime real estate, inhabited by architects, trust-fund screenwriters and other well-heeled creative types. But despite the gentrification, Monti retains a bohemian edge, and has become one of Rome's most rewarding areas for alternative fashion, gourmet street food and al fresco cafe culture.
