Established in 1903, Dallas’s namesake art museum is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the country, housing nearly 25,000 objects from the third century through present-day across 159,000 square feet. In addition to traditional exhibition halls, the museum is also home to a Paintings Conservation Studio, where visitors can see conservationists in the act. The museum’s collection is particularly strong in African sculpture, decorative arts, and contemporary works, including paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and more

This public park spans more than five acres across the busy Woodall Rogers Freeway. It acts as a bridge connecting Uptown to downtown, but it also has abundant grassy areas, a paved trail for joggers or walkers, fountains, a dog park, and daily free programming, ranging from yoga to movie screenings. With all of the other attractions in the area, you'll end up here at some point—and you won't regret it.

The downtown Dallas Neiman Marcus is the O.G. and a legend in its own right. It was something of an anomaly when it first opened in Texas in 1907. After all, oil barons and their wives weren't used to the opulent goods with which Herbert Marcus, Sr., and sister Carrie Marcus Neiman stocked their shelves. Now, you'll find bridal collections, the best ready-to-wear straight from the runways, and younger contemporary brands like Frame, Vince, and more.

With Irving’s famed Cowboy Stadium no more, the Dallas Cowboys have moved out to nearby Arlington (where the Texas Rangers ballpark has been for years). Nicknamed "Jerry World" after the team’s vocal owner, Jerry Jones, the new digs for America’s Team are a 320-foot-tall retractable-roof stadium. Originally envisioned as an entertainment mecca of sorts, the $1.3 billion stadium seats 80,000 people, with standing room for an additional 20,000. These "Party Zones" at the end of the stadium are a good way to get in on the action on a budget.

It’s a morbid part of Dallas’s long history for sure. President John F. Kennedy, Jr., was murdered in downtown Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Now, that little corner of downtown—Dealey Plaza—has become a historical site both for those commemorating Kennedy’s legacy and conspiracy theorists sharing their own version of what happened that fateful November day. Skip the tour-peddlers on the Plaza and head to the Sixth Floor Museum. Dedicated to Kennedy’s life and death, the museum is situated on the sixth floor of the Dallas County Administration Building, the building from which Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. Today, the museum’s main exhibit highlights historic images, news footage, and artifacts surrounding the event.

Food scene

Let’s get a few things straight: If you’re coming from the Carolinas or Kansas City, your definition of BBQ might be different than a Texan’s. Just know that sauce will come on the side and that brisket—not ribs—are the star of the show here. Deep Ellum’s Pecan Lodge has risen to something of cult-status in the city, known for moist brisket that’s cooked low-and-slow in four smokers loaded with mesquite wood. There are other things you shouldn’t miss here, too, like two kinds of house-made sausages, a primal beef rib, and banana pudding from Aunt Polly’s recipe. Get an icy pint of local beer and start picking at your juicy brisket with your fingers. No time for forks here.
