Approximately 30-40 minute walk from the cottage- (all down hill!) on footpaths. It is a really stunning walk with sea views and ends up at South Sands beach where there is a hotel which has a very good restaurant and even better cocktails! To avoid the walk back (uphill!) then are lots of paw-friendly taxis. From South Sands beach, you can get the little tractor-ferry over to Salcombe. It is such good fun. You don’t need to pre-book you just turn up and pay on the boat. It’s about a 30 minute ride to Salcombe and they run every half an hour. (They are closed during the winter so I’m not entirely sure if they will be up and running again yet).

We HIGHLY recommend this trip! From Salcombe harbour (opposite the Victoria Inn) take the little water taxi across the estuary to East Portlemouth. These are the gorgeous sandy beaches you can see on the other side of the estuary from Salcombe. Gara Rock is a restaurant which has just been done up again and it is one of our favourite places to visit!  You can either walk up to the restaurant from East Portlemouth or they have this wonderful service where they collect you in a Land Rover Defender from East Portlemouth and take you up to the restaurant. You need to Pre-book this though. www.gararock.com

Slightly more on the expensive side but has really delicious food and gorgeous cocktails. They also have a lovely spa which non-residents can use for treatments. Well recommended! The massages and facials are INCREDIBLE! www.harbourhotels.co.uk/hotels/salcombe

This pub has to come top on our list for one of our favourites ever! It is about 25 minutes drive from the cottage, so slightly further afield, but a lovely traditional pub with incredible food.  If the tide is right, you can actually get a boat from Salcombe to the Milbrook and back again on an evening  cruise up the estuary. www.millbrookinnsouthpool.co.uk

This is another hotel which is approximately a 15 minute walk from the cottage. Good for a cooked breakfast followed by a walk down to Soar Mill Cove beach. www.soarmillcove.co.uk

Fabulous place for a simple lunch or supper inside your very on glass pod with incredible views over Hope Cove. Our favourite time to visit is at sunset with a bottle of rose. You can connect up to their speakers and play your own music and even phone for more drinks! Perfect place to spend an evening with friends.

‘Overbeck’s (01548 842893, nationaltrust.org.uk/overbecks), the seaside home of inventor Otto Overbeck, is a short walk from the cottage. Thanks to the microclimate, there is a beautiful exotic garden with palm trees and the most amazing mature hydrangeas, with incredible views overlooking the white sandy beaches on the Salcombe Estuary. It is often hard to believe you’re in the UK as the plants are so exotic. Or we walk from our doorstep along the South West Coast Path to either Hope Cove or South Sands, with breathtakingly beautiful views. We believe it is always the best way to unwind, breathing in the fresh sea air. Both walks end in rather lovely destinations for a well-earned glass of wine (either The Cove pub in Hope Cove or the South Sands Hotel).’
