Food Scene

I love a morning cup of matcha and this very simple, very humble little cafe offers one of the best I've had in Brooklyn, along with a selection of breakfasty items, at a reasonable price. It is very small, so be prepared to 'perch' somewhere if you want to stay.

Sumptuous little bakery and 'general store' a little more than a mile from our place. It's a jaunty morning walk and offers amazing baked goods, coffee and local products.

CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Another gorgeous little jewel of a place not too far away and en route to Prospect Park/Brooklyn Museum/Brooklyn Libary & Botanical Gardens. Eleven36 offers pastries, coffee drinks and a carefully-sourced selection of local produce and groceries. Amazing (if pricey!) eggs from the region and a daily pre-prepared fritatta. They also offer 1-2 gluten-free pastries daily.

Sweet little Latin American coffeehouse of the kind I adore, with a great breakfast and lunch menu, gluten-free treats and (most importantly?) Counter Culture Coffee.

Our favorite Jamaican restaurant in Brooklyn and the place that makes a definitive 'Jerk Chicken'. Just a short trot from the Franklin and Brooklyn Museum stops on the local train.

This is a fun, low-key neighborhood spot for arepas and sangria! A great place to take the family for a delicious, reasonably-priced meal and to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

It's a bit of a trek from our place, but we love the atmosphere and the yummy, juicy plates of food that come with a crisp, fresh salad, huge slices of avocado, plantains and delicately spiced black beans. A great place to unwind on a Friday or for a relaxed weekend date.

A bit off of the beaten track, but worth the hike, ride or walk to try one of the best - if not THE BEST - breakfast sandwich in Brooklyn and Counter Culture espresso coffees so expertly pulled that they don't require sweetener. About a mile away from your morning ride, walk or jog in Prospect Park - or a shorter walk from the R train Prospect Av Station.

Perelandra might be a bit pricy, but they are the real deal: ethically sourced produce and products, and some unusual items you can't find elsewhere. They also have a deli-style cafe, pre-packaged salads and a decent juice bar.

I add this location because it is fairly accessible by train from Grand Army Plaza and they are known for locally-sourced products, a superior roast chicken and hard-to-find gourmet items like Luxardo Cherries. I love their gluten-free buckwheat raisin bread baked in upstate New York.
