Food scene

The Roadhouse Cafe is a locals favourite and lucky us we can stroll over to the cafe after a morning swim, all within walking distance from the house. It's open for breakfasts, lunch and dinner. It's said to be a bit of a hipster hang out but don’t let that put you off, the food is excellent and its a nice quiet spot away from central Byron. Next to the Roadhouse is a co working space open to the public and Creature Yoga studio. There is a short cut walk out of the neighbourhood, just ask for directions if you wish to walk.

Another locals favourite set far in the hinterland of Federal, the drive to Doma is beautiful and arriving there feels like you’ve happened upon a hidden gem — although, it’s not so hidden anymore due to word of mouth. Enter the white pebbled courtyard shaded with umbrella’s and palm trees, fresh sushi cones and matcha lattes are passed over the counter. Featured in the New York Times, Doma’s hybrid menu of Japanese cuisine with an Australian twist is a stand out and well worth the drive. They’re only open for breakfast and lunch, so be sure to get there before 2.30pm.

Frida’s Field. Tucked inside the quaint pocket of Nashua in the Byron hinterland, right near Bangalow, Frida’s Field is a joint project between the Rawlings family and Icebergs Group alumni Daniel Medcalf. Housed in a rustic-chic wooden barn overlooking rolling green hills and picturesque woodland, Frida’s Field has been carefully designed to showcase the incredible produce grown on the working cattle farm and sourced from the Northern Rivers surrounds. The menu is contemporary country in style, featuring sustainable produce such as Wagyu-Angus beef taken from the Rawlings’ farm, and fruit and vegies from their adjoining garden and nearby orchards. The focus on local and sustainable is paramount to the owners of the farm, Edward and Jeanie Rawlings, who together with their three children are champions of a home grown food philosophy.

YULLIS - Vegan In May 2019, the team behind Yulli’s Brews and Yulli’s Surry Hills opened their third venture Yulli’s Byron Bay. With two of the owners, Karl and Danielle, having lived in the Byron Shire area for a number of years now, it’s a fitting location for the latest Yulli’s establishment that we’re all really excited about. Yulli’s Byron Bay is 100% vegan. The plant-based menu is modern Asian and dishes are matched with a diverse vegan wine list, local spirits and cocktails, plus of course Yulli’s Brews range of craft beers, cider, kombucha and other beverages. Many of our dishes are also gluten free or can be made gluten free on request.

Bar Heather is the new Parisian-inspired, natural wine focused Restaurant and Bar. Loud and fun with a soundtrack of Afrobeat and late-era disco, it showcases small independent wine producers from around the world. Wine first. That's the philosophy in this dim but rollicking Parisian-style joint on the south side of Byron Bay, where the menu isn't handed over until you've chosen your first drink. Rest assured that every dish on that subsequent menu – from the opening crunch of crisp potato, Manchego cream and shaved local mushrooms, to the deeply satisfying bowl of pippies in buttery, pearlescent chicken broth – is built to harmonise with every drop on wine. Almost every dish is the definition of clever comfort.

Bangalow Market, On the fourth Sunday of each month, Bangalow’s cruisy town hosts a local market with hundreds of stalls. There are several creeks and waterfalls in the gorgeous hinterland surrounding Byron Bay. We love swimming at the base of Killen Falls (though the large, jagged rocks make it slightly tricky to get into the water). Whian Whian is another great spot. We’ve even seen some baby turtles swimming next to us! Minyon falls another beautiful spot with impressive views. The parking is easy here and the walk to the lookout is short and quick. From there, you can go on several bushwalks depending on your preferences.

Retreat

The Creature, COMMA, and Allpress Combo. This little corner of the industrial area features a holistic oasis tucked away on Banksia Drive. With enough self-care activities to fill up an entire morning, a coffee at Allpress is a good place to start before stretching out yesterday’s yoga class at Creature Yoga. ( their second studio) Downstairs and on ground level is COMMA Byron, a re-imagined massage experience and an ode to “conscious minimalism, warm neutrals, pacifying low light and baptism by oiled up limbs.” Shack Palace Rituals used to be here too but they have now moved over to Habitat in the same Arts and Industry area. Shack Palace Rituals is filled with earthy apothecary and a shop focused on turning daily routines into ritual, from dining, beauty, bathing and tea rituals.

Neighbourhoods

Brunswick Heads is a little gem of a town that’s long been overlooked for its more touristy southern sister, Miss Byron Bay—but the times they are a-changin’. And while it’s great people are getting acquainted with this unpretentious fishing village, we’re crossing our fingers it doesn’t get too popular because we love its relaxed quiet vibes. Not far from the free spirited hinterland community of Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads has a vibe of its own. Think fish and chips on the river, ice creams or beer at sunset to live music at the Brunswick Hotel. Also home to some vintage shopping, flick through clothing racks of old levis, paddle board off the harbour, or watching the cabaret at the perfectly retro Brunswick Picture House. The Counter - As you roll into town via Tweed Street, keep your eyes peeled for The Counter, the stripy umbrella and white brick façade of this cute cafe. Come for your morning fix of smooth Allpress Coffee, Probiotic Kitchen kombucha, and baked goodies, though be warned, you may leave with an armful of fresh blooms, locally-crafted ceramics, organic soap bars, and other curious handiworks. Fleet- Lauded as one of the best restaurants in Northern NSW, Fleet found a home in the most unlikely of locations which makes it extraordinary. Having migrated up from Victoria, Fleet’s young owner-operators are sea-changers with an impressive history in hospitality. The intimate dining room only seats about 20 at a time, and dinner is often booked solid weeks in advance, so be sure to call ahead before you set off on your roadie. Brunswick Picture House - An adorabubble old movie theatre built in the 50s, this integral slice of the community’s heritage was underutilised for close to 30 years, until a handful of internationally renowned creatives with a cabaret and circus background restored the building to its former glory. Expect a vibrant creative hub, delightful vintage décor, alfresco tea garden, kiosk, food truck nights, and a revolving roster of art house flicks, classic reruns, comedy, and theatre when they are back on deck post April.
