A pleasant garden terrace opens beside the church opposite in summer, while the spacious interior is given character by dozens of huge wine barrels. The lamb chops here are some of the most succulent and tasty you will find anywhere in the city.

Your nose will guide you to a great bakery with delicious pastries and fresh and varied day-to-day. Just across the street is a coffee shop owned by the same family, and the coffee was equally as wonderful. The owner and the employees are warm and welcoming.

One of the most legendary souvlaki joints in the city, and always crowded with locals and tourists alike. Here you can have pork, chicken, sausage or bifteki in your pitta for little cost. If it's crowded and you just want a souvlaki or two, get a takeaway and eat it further down the road at Monastiraki Square. The nearest metro station is Monastiraki, only a couple of minutes away. The food here has a slight influence from Anatolia rather than Abyssinia (the restaurant name, in Greek), with gentle touches of spice not usually found in Greek cuisine. The location is great and the colorful premises make a pleasant place to while away some time. •The restaurant is about equidistant to Monasiraki and Thissio metro stations.
•This is a great place to eat if you are shopping at the nearby flea market.

For decades, the place to head for food after a hard night's drinking – when just about everywhere else has closed – has been the central meat market, and this old-style restaurant is the pick of the bunch. It's as brightly lit and lacking in decor as the rest but coming here to help see in the new day and watch the butchers setting up their stalls is something of an Athenian rite of passage. If you really want to do as the hardcore locals do, order a steaming bowl of patsas (tripe soup) – but only if you have strong stomach.
•There are lots of good simple dishes to choose from in the trays on display.
•The market is roughly halfway between Omonia and Monastiraki metro stations.

One of the most famous and iconic structures in the world, as well as a symbol of Western civilization, the Acropolis is an unmissable feature on any visit to Athens. Going as soon as it opens will allow you to avoid the worst of the crowds, though sunset is a good time during the winter months, too. The best approach is through the old Plaka area from Syntagma Square. The ticket to the Acropolis includes entry into several other ancient sites within a four day period.

Tucked below the Acropolis, this theatre was a very important venue during the ancient Dionysiac festival – a riot of wine and debauchery. It is usually also blissfully uncrowded in comparison with the big rock above! Look for the pee holes in the posh front seats! You can climb down to the theater from the back of the Acropolis, so you don't need to backtrack. Entry is included in the Acropolis ticket.

Known locally as the Stiles (pronounced 'steeles'), the gigantic columns of this ancient temple are impressive in both scale and size. From here it is a relatively short walk up past the Panathenaic Stadium to the residential area of Metz, a great area to have an evening meal at a taverna. (We recommend Olimpion in

Over twice the height of the Acropolis, this hill is worth the climb for the unparalleled views it affords. You can see across the Acropolis to the sea and all around the city to the surrounding mountains. The tiny chapel at the summit is also delightful. If you don't fancy the hike up, there is a funicular railway on the Kolonaki side. Look out for summer performances at the open-air theatre here.

Central Athens' ritziest area is a good access point for Likavitos and, if you have the money, checking out the designer shops. Come prepared however, even a coffee here will set you back quite a few euros! A far better area for finding authentic tavernas and a host of lively bars is nearby Exarchia, between the Archaeological Museum and Likavitos.

The huge collection housed within this splendid Neoclassical building contains some of the most important archaeological finds from all over Greece, and places the importance of Greek culture in its full context. While unusual for Greece, the museum does open on Monday afternoons. The collection is so massive that it is wise to study the map and concentrate on several halls, rather than trying to see everything.
