Beaches

Enjoy this beach where there are clean restrooms, showers, a grassy area to keep your beach mat or towel free of sand, and a beautiful white sand beach to swim, snorkel, or just hang out to watch for whales and turtles. This is our favorite beach.

Bask like the turtles on the beach here or watch the local surfers dance on the waves. You might think you’re seeing big rocks on the beach but they’re most likely basking sea turtles. Watch from a distance, as we don’t want to get too close and disrupt their space. Check in with the lifeguard about ocean conditions before swimming, snorkeling , or surfing. They’re more than happy to talk to you about ocean safety before you go near the water.

Hiking

We hike this trail a few times a week for the workout and being in nature and because it’s a short 10 minute drive from our home. The views are spectacular early in the morning (gate opens at 7:00 am) with clouds moving in by the afternoon. It is a two mile hike up and back down on the ridge looking in to Waihee valley and our beautiful Pacific Ocean. On clear days the Big Island can be seen in the distance off Maui’s east coast.

Our favorite multipurpose trail consisting of a 6 mile loop trail in the forest. This is a great place to go if you want to take a break from the sun and heat and still get exercise. We come up here a few times a week to mountain bike. There are different levels of biking trails to choose from in the forest from beginners to experienced riders. Watch out for the occasional horse riders on the loop trail.

Rainy day activities

Enjoy the aquarium on a day when the outdoors are not idealistic. It does rain in Maui once in a while. Alternatively it is a relaxing place to go if you want to get out of the sun for a day.
