This is our local pub built in 1898 about 3 minutes walk from the house. It's a no frills traditional place which has not changed much over the years - open fire and good selection of beers and some real ales. No food except crisps and nuts but ideal if you just want a pint without walking too far.

This public house, dating from the late-18th century and retaining much of its original character, can be found off the High Street near the Steeple via one of the vennels. The wood-panelled bar is furnished in traditional style with plenty of interesting features from the past. Guest beers come from micro-breweries in Scotland and England, with two on offer mid-week and three at the weekend. A must-visit venue. Tea, coffee and snacks served daily.

Birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. The Duke of Cumberland set fire to it in 1746 after the Jacobite rising ... it is now a picturesque ruin on the shores of Linlithgow loch. There is a good walk around the loch and the town has many good restaurants, pubs and cafés.

Just 11 miles from the house this is an impressive monument to the memory of William Wallace, champion of Scotland and the inspiration for the Braveheart movie. The climb to the top of the monument is not for the faint hearted but when you get there the views are fantastic. There is now a minibus which can take you up the hill to the monument if you don't fancy the fairly steep walk.

Good hiking trail round Loch Leven, you can take a trip out to the island where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for many years. The reserve is superb for bird watching with several hides out on the lagoons or you can walk through the woodlands to the top of the hill behind the farm. Good café as well. Portmoak gliding centre at Scotlandwell is nearby so you may see lots of gliders.
