Food Scene

This is a pub which has a very good menu and service. There is an emphasis on fish and seafood. The meals will satisfy most appetites and cooked with local produce as far as possible. They have sports on TV, but it does not dominate the atmosphere, which is very cosy and welcoming. A great spot for food & drink!

Sightseeing

This is the oldest continuously running lighthouse in the world, built by the Normans in the 12th century. There is a guided tour, which is fantastic and also a cafe & gift shop on the site. There are walks around the headland, where care is needed in rough weather, but the views and the discovery of fossils in abundance make the effort worthwhile. There are seals to be seen, and at the right time of year, whales can be spotted off shore.

Everything Else

This is where the first landing by a military force of Normans occurred in the late 12th Century. Raymond le Gros made a fortified camp on the headland and defeated a force of Irish and Norse that came against him from Waterford. This battle "at the creeks at Baginbun, Ireland was lost and won" had a significance beyond what the numbers involved would lead one to believe. There is also a Martello Tower here from the early 19th Century, built as part of a defensive system along the east coast against possible invasion by the French.

Parks & Nature

The Normans built this Abbey in the 12th Century. Today it is the centerpiece of an extensive estate, with walking trails, sea views, a fantastic walled garden and a sizeable colony of little egrets. A great place for a picnic out of doors, or a coffee and snack in the coffee shop. In the spring the woodland is carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. There are ruined buildings that point to a history where Tintern was a thriving, working estate. It is now in the hands of the Office of Public Works. Set aside half a day at least. A great place for trail running.
