A quintessentially New Orleans place w great food, extensive menu, quirky decor & atmosphere. They take reservations only for large groups, so the wait is sometimes long unless you get there early but the bar is also hopping! Maple Leaf Lounge for music (mostly funk) is next door!

This is one of the 5 star restaurants of the city with James Beard award winning chef Frank Brigtsen. Fabulous food in a an intimate setting in an old Victorian house just steps from the Mississippi River levee & the St. Charles street car in the Riverbend. One of our favorites for a special evening out!

Cute neighborhood place for breakfast or lunch a short walk from the apartment. It's good basic food in a lively place frequented by locals. We especially enjoy their breakfasts & Friday lunch special fried catfish which can't be beat anywhere in the city! Usually easy to get in & out, but can be crowded on weekends especially around special events, e.g. Mardi Gras & JazzFest. Just a short walk from the apartment, turn left out of the gate & walk 6 blocks to the corner of Burette (the street along the side of the house) & Panola. It's on the uptown/lakeside of the corner.

Maple Street between Cherokee & Fern is a strip of all kinds of restaurants, bars, etc. There's a great local coffee shop P.J's which is our recommendation just steps from a Starbucks. Bruno's Bar & some of our favorite restaurants: Maple Street Cafe serving up wonderful pasta dishes with a flavor of New Orleans (more Middle Eastern than Italian) & great veggie options with sandwiches for a lighter bite. Jamila's serving up Tunisian food with a gregarious host Moncef who greets Russell with a bear hug & buzzes my cheek. Great couscous, lamb dishes & wonderful pastas. Ciro's is a small, intimate French Cafe with excellent food & intimate ambiance.

Drinks & Nightlife

A great venue for New Orleans music, particularly funk & brass band music. The show usually kicks off pretty late around 10 or 11 PM. Check Gambit, Off Beat or Where Y'At (local what's happening' papers) for details & line-up.

Our favorite jazz club....A small, intimate club with fantastic music, typically featuring at least one Marsalis & at least one Neville every week! The rest of the line-up is of comparable quality, so you can't go wrong! What's more, they have a somewhat earlier kick off than most music clubs in town with shows at 8 & 10 PM. Check Gambit, Off Beat or Where Y'At (local what's happening' papers) for details & line-up or go to their website & purchase your tix so you don't miss out. From our place, taxi/Lyft/Uber is best but you can also head down to the Marigny for dinner after a day in the French Quarter, music at Snug Harbor & then catch a ride back Uptown to our place fully sated wi

Entertainment & Activities

Rock N'Bowl is an "only in New Orleans" kind of place: a bowling alley with dance floor & live music often featuring Zydeco, including the best bands from south Louisiana! There's a bar & just across the parking lot is Ye Olde College Inn for great food. Rock N'Bowl is a short walk from the apartment. Check Gambit, Off Beat or Where Y'At (local what's happening' papers) for details & line-up.

Sightseeing

The French Quarter is the oldest part of the City.... Of course Bourbon Street is famous for bars & clubs but we usually avoid it unless we're headed to Galatoire's for a special meal. We prefer Royal Street which has great shops, especially art galleries & antiques with street music during the daytime & on weekends. Or the French Market & Jackson Square area with Cafe Du Monde for beignets, artists in Pirate's Alley or around the square where you can also get your fortune told or catch a carriage ride. Decatur Street has some good restaurants...check out the Decatur St Grocery for mufelletas...a gigantic sandwich of Italian cold cuts, provolone & olive salad which was invented right here

Parks & Nature

Beautiful large park with 2 mile walking/biking path, lagoons & beautiful live oaks extending from St. Charles Avenue to Magazine St! Right on the streetcar line with the zoo & Riverbed/Fly at the back on the other side of Magazine. Originally the site of the 1884 World Cotton Exposition. There are a couple of playgrounds, bench for contemplation & a restaurant toward the back near the golf coarse. Behind the zoo is the Riverview or "Fly" which is a beautiful green space with great views of the Mississippi River & the ships & barges going by. It's full of folks with their blankets or chairs having a picnic or just relaxing & watching the boats go by....a special place that locals love!

An excellent zoo with a Louisiana-focussed area as well as the usual large zoo denizens. There's also a tram & water park here during warm weather which is a great day out for the kids or the young at heart!
