City/town information

Whilst Falmouth is one of Cornwall's largest towns it is still easy enough to explore this port town on foot. Situated in a relatively sheltered bay on the south coast of Cornwall, Falmouth is all about the water. The pretty old harbour and docks on one side of town and sandy beaches on the other; a grassy headland complete with Tudor castle separating them. Make no mistake, this is a working port with some pretty big ships many of which are here to take advantage of what is purportedly the third largest natural harbour in the world. Falmouth is a relatively well off town, something that has been further boosted with the development of the University. This air of prosperity continues along the south coast of the town where grand hotels overlook the beaches with their upmarket beach cafes. https://www.cornwalls.co.uk/top_ten/falmouth.htm

Truro, the UK’s most Southerly city is a vibrant centre of shopping, culture and impressive architecture right in the heart of Cornwall. Centre stage is Truro Cathedral with its impressive gothic towers dominating the skyline. In its shadow, a warren of compact streets are home to an impressive array of independent traders. From boutiques to bookshops and designer interiors to delicatessens, this great little city offers a unique shopping experience. The café culture is pretty impressive too, with hip coffee houses, artisan ice creameries and cocktail bars dotted across the centre. There is a yearlong festival programme, weekly food markets and several art galleries, cultural events and historical attractions: https://www.visitcornwall.com/places/truro

Penryn, near Falmouth, is one of the oldest market towns in Cornwall. Steeped in history, with a fascinating timeline of architecture, a labyrinth of side roads, woodland to explore, beautiful scenery to take in and a dynamic community of people to meet including a thriving art community. Plus, there are some wonderful cafe’s, bars and shops to enjoy. Once the main port on the river with a thriving trade in fish, tin and copper, Penryn became overshadowed by the huge growth of Falmouth. Today, Penryn is a quiet town that retains much of its heritage with buildings dating back to Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian times. The town has been designated as an important conservation area. Penryn is also home to University College Falmouth.

Porthleven is the most southerly working port in the United Kingdom and boasts a picturesque harbour, with some interesting old buildings. The harbour faces south west into the prevailing wind and consequently the harbour construction and sea walls are massive. During winter storms, people visit the town to watch the waves crashing over the sea defences. The harbour once had a fleet of more than 100 drifters used to fish pilchard and mackerel. Stormy Porthleven Stormy Porthleven Porthleven is large enough to cater for visitors whilst retaining the character of an unspoilt fishing village, with its granite harbour and pier and famous clock tower. The area has been inhabited for over 1000 years but the present village started with the construction of the harbour in 1811. It is ideal as a base for a walking holiday as it is situated on the Coastal Path. Many of Cornwall’s attractions and theme parks are within easy reach. The large village has a friendly atmosphere, several good restaurants and a pleasant beach. The village remains unspoilt by progress. It has always been popular with artists and crafts people and there are several shops displaying and selling local work.

Winner of a showcase of national awards including best family holiday destination by Coast magazine and one of the 10 best European beach destinations compiled by TripAdvisor, St Ives is a seemingly subtropical oasis where the beaches are golden, the vegetation is lush and the light piercingly bright. It’s no wonder then that the town has been attracting artists for decades who come to capture the area’s undeniable natural beauty. It started with J M W Turner and the marine artist Henry Moore who first came to St Ives in the mid-1800s and since then the town has become a magnet for some of the world’s greatest painters, sculptors and ceramists.
