Food scene

Varied menu, with terrific fresh seafood. We love the Ahi Tuna appetizer. Sit outside in the summer for the marina views; in the winter, you'll be cozy inside, with views of Onset Bay.

Wonderful staff, great Mexican food, fun bar. My favorite? The chicken mole. To start your evening off on the right foot, choose from a long list of margaritas.

Great, fresh seafood. They also have a sushi bar. It can get crowded, so be prepared to wait on a weekend night.

Walking distance, or a 2 minute drive. Seafood and ice cream! What can be better? Great fish and chips and other fresh seafood, and the best ice cream around. Get the salted caramel cone. Trust me. Take out or eat on their wooden benches.

The Lobster trap is worth the 25 minute drive. A few minutes over the bridge on the Cape, the Lobster Trap started as a fish wholesaler. Hands down the freshest fish and shellfish in the area. Try the Lobster Reuben...it's amazing. Great views if you sit outside by the river.

Japanese food, with a separate hibachi room. We prefer to sit at the sushi bar and watch the masters at work.

This is our only chain restaurant listing, and it is a favorite of ours. The bar is always fun, and the food is surprisingly good. I often get the Fiesta Bowl, and Dan gets fried chicken. But the menu has all your pub favorites, and great beers on tap.

*Cash only* If you ask anyone in Wareham "Who has the best pizza?", they will all answer "Marc Anthonys". Located just off Onset Beach, it is always busy and always delicious. Takeout, delivery, and eat-in.

Two minutes from the house, this is a popular breakfast spot. There may be a line to get in on weekends. I like the linguica and egg sandwich best.

Activities

Candlepin bowling at its best. If you've never bowled the New England way, check it out. The balls are palm-sized, and you get three opportunities to knock down 10 pins. Limited bar and an arcade for the kids top it off. A great night out!

Beaches

Beautiful white sand beach on Cape Cod Bay. You pay by the carload, and there are showers, bathrooms and sometimes a snack bar.

Free and easy to access, Onset Beach is the jewel of Wareham. The views are great, and you can stroll a few yards to eat in any of the great Onset Restaurants, or shop in any of the seasonal stores.

Sightseeing

Enter at Buzzards Bay Park. Take a stroll along the Cape Cod Canal. Check out the people fishing for stripers and watch the boats. Watch out for the bicyclists, skaters and unicyclists (!?). You may get lucky and see the railroad bridge being raised. The canal walk is always busy, and a great favorite for locals..

Walks

On Highland Shore drive, a short walk from our house, nestled between two homes, are steps down to a very narrow public beach. Sit on the steps and watch the sunset. You might catch a glimpse of the bald eagle who frequently hangs out nearby.

This series of trails is about a 20 minute drive from the house. A small parking area leads to wooded trails or a ridge of pine barrens. The best trail? A five minute walk to Buttermilk Bay. You might run into crabbers there, but most likely you will have it to yourself. It's one of the few beaches dogs are allowed on in Wareham.

Located in Mattapoisett, about 20 minutes away. Extensive trail system, all starting at a bridle path. Take the Salt Marsh Trail and you'll be rewarded after a pine-scented stroll through thick trees with a sandy beach overlooking Nasketucket Bay. There's also a nicely paved bicycle trail for you two-wheeler fans.

Myles Standish has a great variety of walking and bike trails. Our favorite trail goes around the reservoir, where we've seen herons and sunbathing turtles.

Neighborhoods

We have the best of both worlds here in the Wewantic section of Wareham. Quiet streets, beautiful river views, and quick access to all necessities. We are right off Route 6, just before the Marion town line. It's all residential, with homes ranging from two room cottages to more luxurious cape cod style homes. The main road is Hathaway street, which provides a quick route to Wareham Crossing, a busy mall with major stores and restaurants. Shaw's Supermarket 2 minutes down Route 6, and Main Street is just a bit further. Lukey park has recently been renovated, and is a great destination for kids. I love to walk my dog along Highland Shores Drive, catching glimpses of the river between the well-kept homes. We often stop at the 10th Avenue steps so Bourbon can do a little swimming at the (very) small public beach.

Shopping

Seakers is one of my favorite places to shop. The owners take old furniture and objects and make them into collectibles. We have a couple items from this store in the house: the fish on the table in our living room and the chest on the front porch. They also represent local artists. Check it out - the store just moved to a bigger space on Cranberry Highway.
