A must do on the Coromandel. Fantastic beach. Swim with the fish in the marine reserve.
Just a few minutes north of Tairua. A hidden gem. Visit the Sailors Grave at the northern end of the beach for some local history.
Take a brisk 15min walk over the headland to Otara Bay where you are almost guaranteed to be the only one on the beach.

Hot Water Beach
Dig your own hot pool in the sand at low tide.
Visit old gold mines and tunnels. Swim in the river. At the end of the road there is a track that leads to a number of bush walks of varying duration, including a couple that involve walking through old tunnels left over from the mining days.

Otara Bay can be reached by walking over the headland at the northern end of Te Karo Bay. This area is also a kiwi sanctuary, although you are unlikely to see a kiwi as they are very shy and nocturnal.
Otara Bay is frequently deserted even in the height of the season.

Sightseeing
An easy 20 minute walk to the summit from the car park. Local Maori legend has it that if you climb to the summit of Mount Paku, you will return one day! Fantastic 360 degree views from the summit.
It is also possible walk around Paku using the many walkways and stairs available. Start either at the end of The Esplanade past the Marina, or from the South end of the surf beach using the Oceania walkway.

This is an easy 40 - 45 minutes walk. Start at the Pacific Harbour Villas and walk around the estuary, past the golf course, over the new board walk and bridge across the Pepe Stream, back down Pepe Road, across the Tairua bridge and back to the Pacific Harbour Villas

Halfway along Pumpkin Hill Road there is a very short walk (10mins) up to the trig. From there are great views south down the coast and out to sea. The original painting by Paul Herbert in our lounge is painted from this perspective.

Accessible only by boat make sure you visit the Sea Cave, The Blow Hole and swim with the fish in the Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve. Charter boats operate out of Hahei
