When you are in the mood for a good burger and fries, Tommy's does a fine job. Hot, fast, fresh, and relatively inexpensive. No alcohol; consider ordering to go, as the inside dining area is small.

Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop is a small artisan bakery in one of Anchorage’s oldest neighborhoods, just south of downtown. Their line of baked goods is top-to-bottom handmade, including crusty, traditional breads, sweet and savory croissants and scones, hearty muffins, fresh baked cookies, frosted cakes, tarts, multi-grain granola, a variety of daily sandwiches, and holiday specialties. Of course, they brew organic, fair-trade coffee and tea. Just try and walk out of here with less than an armload of total fabulosity.

The outdoor trail offers a fascinating walkthrough exhibit of traditional housing from in-earth homes to the beautiful wood meeting lodges. Catch the shuttle between the Anchorage Museum and the Heritage Center if you didn't rent a car.

The Alaska Native collection is nothing short of magnificent. We like the interactive history gallery, Alaska artists in the spotlight, and the hands-on science discovery center's marine life tanks and planetarium. Don't miss the section on the Great Earthquake of 1964.

Also, cell reception is limited to nonexistent, so consider using a GPS to track your walk to aid you should you get turned around and end up taking a longer walk than intended.
