Pubs

Pubs worth visiting while you are here
This is a perfect place for lunch or an early evening drink. You can sit outside on the pontoon or inside the old thatched pub if the weather is bad. I would advise you book as it is popular with people who arrive by land or sea. There are beautiful footpaths either side of the Inn that take you past some idyllic coves and secluded beaches.

This is a popular watering hole in Falmouth Town. It has been recently refurbished with taste. It is one of the best places to have an evening drinking, either inside or out. Set by the old quay it has bags of atmosphere and is close to a great fish and chip shop and other takeaways. Like most places in Falmouth the food is value for money

The Heron Inn is a beautiful riverside gastropub on the outskirts of Truro, overlooking the Truro and Tresillian river where they join the river Fal. It boasts stunning views across the estuary and is accessible by both car, cycle and boat. Malpas is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with breath taking views of the rivers and surrounding hills. Covered in trees and foliage, the colours are exciting all year round, and even more so in autumn when the valley comes alive in a sea of reds, browns and yellows. There are fantastic walks from the village to the surrounding countryside, including the riverside walk to the picturesque village of St. Clement, and then onward to Tresillian

Beaches

There are thousands of beaches in Cornwall. These are only a taste of the very local beaches
Just 8 minute walk from the Annexe it is YOUR beach. It is also very popular with local swimmers, dog walkers, and families. There is a cafe and carpark along with a pitch and putt! Why not pop down there one evening with a BBQ or wander up to the Hooked On The Rocks restaurant for a fabulous seafood supper. Do note that there are dog restrictions during July and August.

This is Falmouth's largest beach and widely considered the best in the area, regularly achieving the Blue Flag standard of cleanliness. Its crescent sand rocky outcrops make it very popular with families and water sport enthusiasts. It has great amenities and dining. It is a 25 minute walk from the Annexe along the SW Coast Path and 10 minutes from Falmouth Town Center. Beachside showers and toilets are open all year round and there is a cafe serving hot and cold food right on the beach. The sea here is clean, clear and generally safe as the beach is well sheltered from rough seas by the Lizard Peninsula to the west. In addition there is lifeguard cover during the summer months so swimming is fine. The gently sloping white sand also has plenty of rock pools to explore at low tide with shrimps, crabs and squat lobsters in abundance. During the winter there is occasionally surf at Gyllyngvase and the reef just to the west can produce a reasonable wave. However, the beach is generally more suited to calm water sports such as kayaking and stand up paddle-boarding. The backdrop to Gyllyngvase beach is equally pleasant with St Mary's Gardens. Opened in 1910 the gardens are home to sub-tropical plants such as colourful Agapanthus and giant leafed Gunnera. The views aren't bad either with Pendennis Point and Castle in the distance and all the shipping coming and going from Falmouth harbour to watch. Some important details: It is buggy-friendly Sand Chair available, Telephone 01326 312884 Public toilets are located 20 yards away from the beach Cafe's ands shops close by. Linked via the South West Coast Path to Swanpool Beach and Nature Reserve There is a large car park 100 yards away The beach is raked every morning during the summer months There is RNLI Lifeguard cover between May - September at Gyllyngvase Beach (dates vary) Please note: Dogs are banned from the beach between May 15th and September 30th, between the hours of 10am and 6pm. This is a good honest Cornish town, synonymous with the maritime world. It is adjoined with the big fishing port of Newlyn which has the best fish in the county. It is also the gateway to the very south west tip of the country. The town is not a tourist trap like neighbouring St Ives but worth a visit.

This is the most popular destination in Cornwall. Famous for its light, it has inspired artists for centuries. It is impossibly beautiful with quaint little streets, sandy beaches and beach restaurants. For those who want to explore its artistic heritage then take time to visit the Tate Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Of course, it is very popular in July and August. If you plan to arrive by car then you should consider parking at St Erth and take the train. You will see one of the most spectacular coastlines in the country overlooking Carbis Bay Beach, Porthkidney Beach and with views of the expansive Hayle Beach in the distance. You should plan at least 1 hour drive from the Annexe as traffic can get heavy at the height of the season.

Cadgwith is everybody's idea archetypal fishing village with its tight cluster thatched cottages lining the sides of the valley and the small fleet of colourful fishing boats winched up on the shingle beach. The fact that the boats are still in use and the local pub (The Cadgwith Cove Inn) is renowned for its singing of Cornish songs of a Friday evening is testament to the traditional character of this village still being alive and well. The village also has a thriving gig club.

Coverack is a pretty fishing village tucked away in a sheltered bay on the eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula. Unsurprisingly, the main point of interest is the little harbour around which are a clutch of old cottages, some of which are thatched. The harbour was constructed in 1724 from local green serpentine and hornblende for the growing pilchard fleet that operated from here. There is also a beautiful beach and rock pools making it an ideal spot for the family to enjoy a wonderful seaside experience.

Home to the world's third largest natural harbour, Falmouth boasts some of Cornwall's best views. There are little spots along the high street where you can glimpse the sea only metres away, and the town is the ultimate gateway to coastlines, secret coves, and unspoilt creeks along the Fal River. The town itself is largely pedestrianised so walking with dogs is stress free. The main street has managed to attract many bespoke and boutique shops which are uniquely Cornish. There are many cafes and areas to rest and take in the beauty of the Fal harbour. To make a day of it, why not try visiting the National Maritime Museum, Pendennis Castle and Point, and Gylly Beach.

This is a perfect place to stretch your legs without encountering any strong inclines. The Old Tram Road hugs the beautiful Restronguet Creek and is a mecca for dog walkers. You are never more than a few metres away from the shoreline guaranteeing fresh sea air and photo opportunities. The old tram road was a horse drawn railway that carried mined copper from Gwennap to its ultimate destination at the docks in Devoran and Point. Although the railway closed in 1915 and the rails were taken up in 1919, the road surface was not made up until 1951. Consider taking this walk if you are travelling to or from Truro and always find time to have a drink in the Old Quay Inn.

Deep in the fairytail forest of the Kennall Vale, the old gunpowder works that once dominated the area are slowly being covered by moss and foliage, creating a magical ruin that looks straight out of a fantasy movie. Originally fired up in 1812, the Kennall Vale Gunpowder Works were laid out across 20 acres of forest land. The gunpowder was mainly sent to the Cornish mines rather than contributing to military uses. At its height, the factory employed 50 men and was very successful despite a spectacular accident that caused five of the production buildings to explode. By the 1880s blasting technology was moving on to more sophisticated chemical explosives and by the 1910s the works were closed and abandoned. Today many of the thick stone buildings still remain in the vale, maintained (but never restored) by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The buildings are slowly being reclaimed by the humid forest flora, turning sooty industrial leftovers into enchanted ruins from a literally less-destructive era.

Sightseeing

This is unspeakably beautiful. Get there early and park in the NT car park. You can enjoy the beach or walk the SW Coast Path. You might see the rare Cornish Chough with its red legs and crow like appearance.

Food scene

This is your local restaurant and one of the best in Cornwall. It is value for money but do expect £30-40 per head just for food. The portions are usually generous and bags of flavour. The views are lovely. Quite a romantic place and easily walkable back to the Annexe

This is an award winning restaurant owned by the famous chef Michael Caines. It is certainly a fine dining experience and is one of Cornwall's more expensive restaurants. However, it will be a real treat and unforgettable experience with dreamy views over Maenporth Beach. Why not try the 2 mile walk back to the Annexe along the coast path, or take a taxi for approximately £10.

Fish and Chips! This is in town. There are lots of tables indoors but you will need to book. It is a good meal and should be eaten sitting on the adjacent quay!

This is actually the best fish and chips in the area. Parking may be an issue unless there are spaces opposite. It is in Penryn.
